Washington quarterback Kyle Allen suffered a gruesome leg injury that forced him to be carted from the field and left viewers queasy.

Allen's horrific misfortune came in the match against the New York Giants, which Washington ended up losing 23-20.

The injury occurred late in the first quarter during an Allen dropback on first-and-10 from the Giants’ 31.

Allen scrambled to evade pressure from safety Jabrill Peppers, who fell to the ground as he pursued Allen and hooked his left leg around Allen’s left calf.

Allen’s left foot was planted, and he suffered what looked like a significant lower leg injury on the play. He was diagnosed with a small fracture and a dislocated ankle and is schedule for an MRI on Monday, according to NFL Network.

Athletic trainers immediately tended to Allen, who was eventually taken off the field on a cart with his leg in a medical boot. Officials flagged Peppers for unnecessary roughness.

Viewers were left queasy after replays showed the gruesome extent of the injury to the quarterback.

Replacement QB feels for Allen

After being carried off the field, Allen was replaced by Alex Smith, who entered the game for his second stint of action since returning earlier this season from his own devastating leg injury.

The compound leg fracture he suffered in Week 10 in 2018 became infected, which threatened his career, his ability to walk and his life.

After an arduous recovery, Smith returned to the team this season as a backup to early-season starter Dwayne Haskins and Allen. Now he has taken the place of a quarterback who suffered his own significant leg injury.

Smith finished completing 24 of 32 pass attempts for 325 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions.

Smith will return to the starting lineup for Washington next week, which will mark his first start in nearly two years.

The back-up quarterback admitted that his promotion had left him with mixed feelings.

“I’m enjoying every single day and I’ve continued to progress and get better. I’m thankful for that. It’s another step,” Smith said Sunday, via ESPN.

“I’m incredibly bummed for Kyle.”

"I knew Kyle was down and knew it was serious once he stayed down. You get ready to roll and all of a sudden you see them bringing out an air cast and the cart.

"I know that routine well. I'm trying to lock it in, but feeling for Kyle."
