'Super-spreader event': Uproar over 'insane' scenes amid pandemic

There were scary scenes in America on Saturday when thousands of fans stormed the field following Notre Dame’s shock college football victory over the No.1-ranked Clemson.

As soon as Clemson’s last attempt to score in double overtime fell short, Notre Dame fans rushed the field as if their team wasn’t playing in a pandemic that reached a new peak this week in the United States.

Social-distancing went completely out the window as thousands lingered on the field to celebrate.

Obviously, Notre Dame fans had reason to be excited.

Their team just beat the top team in the country and secured a path to College Football Playoff contention.

Fans wait years for these kind of nights.

However, the coronavirus doesn’t care that they had reason to be excited.

It remains dangerous, a virus that has killed more than 200,000 Americans and continues to spread at record rates.

Per Notre Dame’s own numbers, there were 17 coronavirus cases reported on campus Friday with a daily average of 27.3 over the last seven days.

Like so many other college campuses, COVID-19 has a presence at Notre Dame and beating Clemson doesn’t change that.

Hopefully, Saturday’s game won’t be seen as a super-spreader event, but the field-stormers at Notre Dame - as well as the school administrators that allowed them into the stadium with no evident plan to stop them from crowding - certainly seem to have done the best they can to create one.

NBA superstar LeBron James was among those to express concern on social media.

Notre Dame up to No.2, Alabama new No.1

Alabama is now No. 1 in The Associated Press college football poll for the first time this year, extending its record of consecutive seasons with at least one week on top of the rankings to 13.

Notre Dame moved up two spots to No.2 on Sunday after upsetting Clemson in a dramatic double-overtime game.

Ohio State remained No.3, while Clemson gave up the top spot for the first time this season and landed at No.4.

The Crimson Tide, who had an open date, received 59 of 62 first-place votes. Notre Dame, which has its best ranking since it was No.1 at the end of the 2012 regular season, received two first-place votes. Ohio State got one.

Texas A&M moved up two spots to No.5, the Aggies’ best ranking since they finished fifth to end the 2012 season.

Florida jumped two spots to No. 6 after beating Georgia to snap a three-game losing streak against its SEC East rival. The Bulldogs fell eight spots to a season-low 13th.

No.8 BYU, No.9 Miami and No.10 Indiana round out the top 10.

The Hoosiers moved up three spots after beating Michigan to receive their best ranking since they were No.10 in 1969.
