'Would be enormous': Mike Tyson's $1.5m offer to fight footy greats

Mike Tyson had the sporting world in a buzz when he recently announced his plan to return to the ring and he already has a number of high-profile cross-code athletes lining up for the fight.

The 53-year-old former heavyweight champion sent fans into a frenzy after revealing a video of his sheer power and aggression hitting the pads.

Then his new coach MMA coach Rafael Cordeiro uploaded a photo of Tyson in great shape following a workout.

But despite his last fight coming in 2005, the former ‘Baddest Man on the Planet’ has a host of options to choose from for a return bout including All Blacks legend Sonny Bill Williams, NRL great Paul Gallen and AFL great Barry Hall.

“I’d hold it at Melbourne Arena where we’d get over 10,000 or even Princes Park where they got 30,000 for Jeff Fenech versus Azumah Nelson,” promoter Brian Amatruda told the Daily Mail.

“He might be 53 years old but he’s still a huge name and any of those blokes Hall, Gallen or Sonny Bill would jump at the chance to get into the ring with him.

“I’d make it part of a card with a world title fight. It would be enormous. Not just a fight, it would be an event.”

Amatruda said he offered Tyson’s promoter $US1 million ($AUD1.5 million) straight away when he heard of ‘Iron Mike’s interest in returning to the ring.

But anyone stepping into the ring with Tyson would have to be careful with his trainer recently admitting he still possessed one of the meanest hooks in the business.

“The power is different level,” he told the Ariel Helwani MMA Show.

“I have trained a lot of heavyweights in my career, with not a lot of respect for everybody, but he is almost as powerful as Wanderlei Silva is right now.

“When you talk about power, I held his right hook and thought ‘he is going to kill somebody’.”

Fans were left in awe after the 53 year old posted a video of him striking the pads during a workout.

The sheer power and speed the big man still possesses had fans declaring he would obliterate some heavyweights right now.

Tyson became the youngest heavyweight champion in history at just 20 years of age when he stopped Trevor Berbick for the title.

He went on to record 44 knockouts in 50 wins.
