Golf legend Jack Nicklaus tweets endorsement of President Donald Trump: 'He has delivered on his promises'

Jack Nicklaus has liked what he’s seen from President Donald Trump, and now he wants four more years.

The 18-time major winner posted a lengthy statement via Twitter on Wednesday saying he has cast his vote for Trump and urging others to do the same.

Nicklaus states that Trump has already delivered on his promises, though neglects to specify which victories Trump has achieved since moving into the White House. He also claims that electing Trump is key to avoiding “a socialist America and have the government run your life.”

Nicklaus’ support for Trump is nothing new. The Golden Bear supported Trump in the 2016 election and has spoken glowingly of his administration since, even praising the president’s golf game as similar to his:

“Trump plays pretty well. He plays a little bit like I do. He doesn’t really ever finish many holes. But he can hit the ball, and he goes out and plays and just enjoys it. But he’s won several club championships. He can play.”

The pair have a business relationship through the world of golf, such as Nicklaus designing a Trump-owned course or having a villa named after him. Trump’s administration has also earmarked $20 million for a mobile children's hospital project backed by Nicklaus.

Soon after Nicklaus’ endorsement, Trump welcomed it with open arms:

Nicklaus has been a longtime financial donor to Republican causes, including to Trump’s presidential campaign. He also isn’t the first big name in sports to endorse Trump after battling coronavirus, as former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden did the same last week. Obviously, Joe Biden has received his own endorsements from the sports world as well.

While it’s hard to say what kind of impact a celebrity endorsement might have, it’s hard to see Nicklaus’ tweet hurting Trump in the golfer’s native state of Ohio. FiveThirtyEight currently gives the president a 59 percent chance of winning the swing state.
