'What a story': Grand final fairytale as Marlion Pickett goals on debut

Richmond debutant Marlion Pickett was the story of the week leading up to the AFL Grand Final, and he more than justified his selection with a scintillating first half against the GWS Giants.

The 27-year-old, who Richmond signed through the newly introduced mid-season draft, matched Tigers superstar Dustin Martin’s 11 disposals at half time.

Keeping up with the former Brownlow Medal winner was no mean feat, considering Martin was already being discussed as the frontrunner for the Norm Smith medal.

Pickett continued his golden run with a goal in the third quarter that sent the MCG into a frenzy, putting the Tigers up by more than 50 points.

It comes after Pickett won the VFL Grand Final with the Tigers the week before, winning best on ground in the process.

Channel 7 commentator Cameron Ling was full of praise for the rookie.

"He's been superb. Composed. He hasn't felt like he's been rushed out there. His ball use has been really good," Ling said.

“Three inside 50s and even had the composure for a nice little blind turn.

"He's 27 years old, he's played against men, he's played senior footy, VFL grand final, he's been able to come straight in and make an impact. Wonderful achievement."

Tigers fans were equally thrilled with the unlikely star’s incredible performance.

At three quarter time, the Tigers look likely to take a thumping victory for their second premiership in three years, leading 81 to 19.
