Woman Spills Wine on Friend's Pillow, Replaces It with 'Identical, Thrifted' Version that Leaves Friend Fuming

While the woman says the thrifted pillow was by the same brand, her friend isn't impressed

A woman who spilled a glass of wine on a decorative pillow in her friend's apartment says she tried to rectify the problem by replacing the pillow with one she found at a thrift store — but the friend isn't pleased.

In an anonymous post shared to Reddit, the 24-year-old woman says that her friend (whom she calls "Wendy") recently got a new apartment and that the wine-spilling incident occurred at the house-warming party.

"I accidentally spilled my wine on one of her throw pillows," the woman writes. "I tried to wash it out, but no luck."

She offered to replace the pillow — only to discover that it was out of her price range.

"Of course, I offered to replace the pillow and Wendy sent me the link to where she bought it. It was SEVENTY DOLLARS for a tiny little carrot pillow," she writes. "I told her I would definitely replace it, but I would probably have to wait for a few weeks for my next check because that eats into my gas money."

A few days later, the woman was shopping at a thrift store when she saw "the exact pillow" — and for only $12.

"I got it because it was cheaper and now Wendy would be able to have her complete living room quicker than we thought," she adds.

When she brought the pillow to Wendy, however, her friend was confused. "First she was happy, but then she was like 'How are you gonna get to work?' I explained that I found it at a thrift store and she threw it at me and acted all grossed out."

While Wendy goes thrifting frequently, she told the friend that she doesn't buy "soft furnishings" secondhand.

"I offered to wash it and bring it back, but she said no and still demanded that I buy the one from the actual store," the woman writes. "I said no, I would wash the thrifted pillow for her, but I’m not buying a pillow for seventy dollars. She said it was my fault for spilling wine in the first place and said I was 'too clumsy to live.' Then I said for someone who wants to host parties, you’re being a big brat about a little spill."

Now, the friend has been exiled from the group chat – which has seemingly been renamed “The Pillow Crisis of 2024."

The woman ends her post with a plea to Reddit users: is she in the wrong for trying to replace the pillow with a thrifted version?

Reddit users are largely split, with many saying the thrifted pillow was a nice gesture, but doesn't exactly make up for the wine spill.

"[Wendy] also spent that $70. Even if the thrifted item is identical, she’s still out $58 that she spent on a brand new pillow ... And this is her first apartment and she brought all her friends over to show it off! She probably spent a lot of time and money decorating and was really proud of it," writes one commenter.

Adds another: "You ruined her expensive throw pillow, accidentally, but still. She has every right to expect that you will replace it with a brand-new pillow, not a used item from a thrift store."
