A woman turns to Reddit for advice after she was caught in a sticky situation with her co-worker.

The 23-year-old lives alone in a small two-bedroom house and found herself at the center of workplace gossip when she declined a request for temporary housing.

She explains in her post, “one room is mine, the other one is basically my everything room. It’s my office, my closet, storage, sometimes I just lay on the floor in there and stare at the ceiling when life sucks lol. it is NOT a guest room.”

For her, living alone is a hard-earned privilege, especially after surviving a string of “horrible roommates.” Her home, she says, is “literally my safe little bubble.”

When a coworker was kicked out by her own roommates, the poster tried to be supportive without overextending herself, saying, “I felt bad and was like ‘that sucks omg’ and even sent her a few places to look at. I was trying to be helpful without inviting chaos into my life.”

But later that night, the coworker texted her, asking, “Hey I was thinking maybe I could just crash with you for a few weeks since you live alone and have the space?”

The request left her unsettled. She emphasizes that their relationship is strictly professional, noting, “we’re cool at work but we’ve never even hung out outside of lunch breaks and complaining about our boss.”

She adds, “She doesn’t know anything about me. and I don't know her like that. Why would she live in my house?”

Despite her discomfort, she responded politely, writing, “i totally get that you’re going through it but i really value my space and I’m just not in a place where I can have someone stay with me.”

The next day, her coworker’s demeanor shifted, and soon rumors began to swirl. “Another coworker tells me she said I ‘let her be homeless’ when I ‘have an entire room to myself.’ like GIRL. First of all, she’s staying at her bf’s place. Second of all, I pay to live alone. That's the whole POINT.”

She explains her reasoning further: “I don’t wanna feel tense or uncomfortable in my own space. I don’t wanna tiptoe around a person I barely know.”

The fear of a short stay turning into a long-term arrangement also weighed on her mind: “I definitely don’t wanna deal with ‘just a few weeks’ turning into ‘I'm looking but nothing’s coming through yet’ for 2 months.”

Now, she feels isolated at work as colleagues take sides. “Now people at work are acting like I’m the bad guy. Sorry for not letting a coworker move into my apartment because she had a bad fight? I don’t know. I feel bad but also…no.”

After hearing out the advice of others on the internet, OP posted an update that offered a surprising resolution to the tale. "she went to jail, lol," the poster wrote.
