Life on Mars saw viewers immediately fell in love with the time-travelling escapades of Sam Tyler in the hit BBC drama Life on Mars.

Greater Manchester Police DCI Sam Tyler (John Simm) was struck by a car but wakes up in 1977, still working as a policeman but with complete different rules.

The strange, science fiction drama blended elements of Lost, Doctor Who, and cop dramas as viewers wondered if Sam Tyler had time travelled, death or just in a coma.

The groundbreaking series, which was the brainchild of Matthew Graham and Ashley Pharaoh, subsequently spawned a spin-off called Ashes to Ashes.

Life on Mars ran for two series and came to an end in 2007. Its spin-off, Ashes to Ashes, began a year later and concluded in 2010.

A third show called Lazarus was in the pipeline for several years and was poised to end the story of Gene Hunt and Sam Tyler and see the pair wake up in 1977 yet again. Series creator Matthew Graham revealed in June 2023 the project was dead despite huge fan interest into another mystery series.

The cast of the shows have largely gone on to make big TV careers while one actor quit the industry to step up his own construction firm. Here’s everything that you need to know about the cast of Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes.

DCI Sam Tyler was the bewildered copper who was suddenly in 1970s Manchester - did he time travel? Was he dead? Was he in a coma? It wasn't entirely clear at first, but viewers learned he was in a coma.

Life on Mars was the platform for John Simm to spring board off to became a TV star, with his next role being the Master in BBC's Doctor Who where he played opposite David Tenant. He returned to the role years later alongside Peter Capaldi.

John has been in several other popular TV roles including Mad Dogs, Strangers, Cold Storage The Lakes and State of Play. He has also made numerous film appearances such as Human Traffic, Devilwood and Skellig.

He is currently starring as another police officer, DSU Roy Grace, in ITV drama Grace, which recently returned for its third series.

Alongside co-star Philip Glenister on DNA Journey, Simm recently discovered his father was not his biological parent, but instead a man called Terry Smith. Smith has sadly passed away but the ITV show learned he used to visit the same working men's clubs as Ronald Simm.

Speaking about the episode, Simm said: “It’s turned out to be such a massive thing in my life and all I was doing was a favour for Phil so he didn’t have to do it on his own. It’s spun my world... everything I thought I knew wasn’t real.”
