Victoria Beckham is rarely seen wearing anything other than high heels, and once said she would “rather die” than wear a pair of Crocs.

So it’s safe to assume her love for a pair of heels extends to the people around her, as well as to those who work for her fashion and beauty labels.

One woman recently went viral on TikTok, gaining over 92,000 views, for claiming the heel-obsessed celeb gave her a job because she wore heels to her interview.

Florence Bird, 30, worked as a social media manager for Victoria Beckham Beauty from December 2019 to April 2021. In a TikTok video, she shared that watching David Beckham’s Netflix docuseries BECKHAM recently reminded her of the part wearing heels played in her job interview at the time.

She began her video by declaring: “I’m convinced that wearing a pair of high heels to an interview with Victoria Beckham is the reason why I got the job.”

Bird continued to explain that she was invited to a final job interview at the label with Beckham and co-founder Sarah Creal, and immediately “freaked out” over what she should wear in order to “make an impression”.

She showed several selfies taken in the changing room of Zara at the time, as she tried to figure out what to wear to the interview, as well as mirror selfies taken at home when she was choosing between shoes.

Bird ended up wearing a pair of black-and-white checkered heel pumps from a 2016 collaboration between LK Bennett and Bionda Castana, which she purchased in a sample sale. When she turned up at the office for the interview, she noticed another candidate sitting in the reception area wearing ballerina flats.

“There’s absolutely nothing wrong with ballerina flats - in fact, they’re iconic and they’re on trend right now,” Bird said, adding: “But I felt like for meeting Victoria Beckham, you better put on like some killer heels or at least something a little bit snazzy.”

When she entered the interview, Bird claimed Beckham gave her a “little [look] up and down” and noticed her choice of heels.

“I always say to my parents [that] I credit wearing those heels as to why I got the role and the position, and then I worked with her for a year and a half,” Bird concluded.

Bird tells Yahoo UK that meeting Posh Spice at the final stage of the long interview process felt like an opportunity for the fashion designer to gauge her personality and give her approval before the company made an offer, “in which case I felt the heels played a part”.

“I felt like wearing heels set the tone that I understood who I was meeting and that stylish heels were very much a part of Victoria’s personality - which maybe the other candidate didn’t quite grasp - as she was wearing flat,” Bird says.

She points towards an interview Beckham previously did with British Vogue’s former editor-in-chief Edward Enninful, in which she was asked: “Heels or flats?” Beckham replied: “Heels - always, always, always!”

Recalling the interview, Bird says: “The interview itself is a bit of a blur but I do remember calling my mum straight away afterwards and saying how relieved I was that I chose to wear heels. In the interview both [Victoria] and the then-CEO Sarah Creal were wearing Victoria Beckham peep-toe thigh-high heeled boots. So I remember feeling I really matched their energy.”

Despite the success wearing heels to this particular interview brought her, Bird doesn’t think it’s a must for women to don stilettos to the office. However, she advises candidates to be “mindful of the contest and who you are interviewing for or with”.

“Victoria Beckham Beauty is a luxury brand led by a style icon, so I knew it was important to think about my appearance,” she says. “For me, I was going [into an] interview with an icon of my childhood - whose own personal style I’d been obsessed with and admired for years - so I wanted to look like the best version of myself.”

In 2016, Beckham surprised fans when she stepped out at the end of her show at London Fashion Week that year in a pair of white trainers instead of her signature stiletto. She told The Telegraph at the time: “I just can’t do heels any more. At least not when I’m working.”

But it appears that the former pop star simply can’t stay away from her Achilles heel. Most recently, she was seen at the premier of BECKHAM wearing a pair of pointed stilettos with a black toe and heel and transparent sides.

However, she has embraced flat shoes on occasion - despite once declaring that she “can’t concentrate” in them. In 2008, she told the Daily Mail: “I could go to the gym if I wore flats, I’d love to go to the gym, but I just can’t get my head around the footwear.”
