It’s rare that a crime drama comes along that doesn’t feel worlds away from reality, but believe it or not, we think we’ve just stumbled upon one. The Better Sister is the twisted sibling thriller you’ll find oddly relatable – and the good news is, it’s coming to Amazon Prime Video very soon.
Based on bestselling author Alafair Burke’s novel of the same name, the series will introduce us to estranged sisters Chloe (Jessica Biel) and Nicky (Elizabeth Banks), who have chosen to live completely separate lives. That is, until a serious crime - the murder of Chloe’s husband, no less - sees the pair unexpectedly drawn back together.

What is The Better Sister about?
The eight-part series is based on Alafair Burke’s 2019 novel and explores the terrible things that drive sisters apart – and, ultimately, brings them back together again. Firstly, we meet Chloe (Jessica Biel), a high-profile media executive who lives a picturesque life with her handsome lawyer husband Adam (Corey Stoll) and teenage son Ethan (Maxwell Acee Donovan).
Then, there’s her estranged sister Nicky (Elizabeth Banks), who struggles to make ends meet and stay clean. The pair don't speak, but when Chloe’s husband Adam is brutally murdered, the prime suspect sends shockwaves through the family. Cue the reunion of the two sisters, as they try to untangle a complicated family history to learn the truth behind Adam's death.
“I’m excited for people to see it unfold, who don’t know how the book ends, and all the twists and turns that are about to happen,” Elizabeth Banks told Glamour of the series. “I love a whodunit. And what’s fun about the series is that we’re all chess pieces getting moved around. Each episode sort of explores the level of control each person has at any given time.”
Despite the murder at the centre of it, the series will no doubt resonate with viewers everywhere. Because, whether we’ve got siblings or not, most of us will recognise how a major life event or tragedy can give us a new appreciation of our family, whatever our history with them.

Is book the series is based on any good?
Yes! It's the sort of book you’ll struggle to put down long past a reasonable hour to go to bed. We don't yet know how closely the series will follow the book, but if you haven’t read it, you can expect a hefty dose of twists and turns. Critics agree, too, having described it as "mesmerising", "fast-moving" and "a non-stop thriller fest".
