I Tried This One-Step Styling Tweak, and My Bed Looks So Much More High-End
As the focal point of a bedroom, it’s important to be thoughtful with the styling of your bedding. I used to think it was all about pillows — the more, the merrier. By now, my husband and I have four regular pillows, four throw pillows, a long lumbar pillow, and a throw blanket. I love being surrounded by pillows of all shapes and sizes (especially now that I’m pregnant), but the more I piled on, the more I realized something was still missing.
I eventually discovered that the accessory with the biggest visual impact wasn’t even on top of the bed. Earlier this year, I decided to finally invest in a crisp, new set of percale sheets from Serena & Lily — and from a duvet insert to matching shams, I went all out. Unlike most bedding stores and sites, this was the first time I had an option to include a bed skirt in the bundle. I’ve always loved the way they look in hotel rooms, but I never felt like we needed one.
Our current home came furnished, though, and the dark wood frame doesn’t wrap around the entire bed. I’ve also added a thick mattress topper, so you see much more of the unappealing black box spring underneath the mattress, ultimately ruining the fresh and luxurious look of the sheets.
Lo and behold, a skirt made the bed feel so much more elevated, complete, and tailored. I applied the same idea to our guest room, which also had box springs peeking out from the striped linen quilts. Similar to the Serena & Lily style, I opted for a paneled cotton bed skirt from Pom Pom Home. Doing so made a world of difference, resulting in a more expensive-looking, put-together set of twin beds.
When it comes to a bed skirt, I recommend buying a thicker, higher-quality neutral option that complements any print or bedroom color you may have. That way, you don’t have to keep moving your heavy mattress and changing it out if you decide to switch your sheets. You also don’t want to settle for a flimsy material that slides around. Go with one that’ll stay put and hug your bed frame perfectly.
All in all, this bedding accessory may seem like an unnecessary, additional cost, but I guarantee that it’s quite the underrated finishing touch worth having. Plus, it’s perfect for stylishly concealing under-bed storage in small spaces!
