It's official: Mary Janes are cool again. The little round-toe shoe, with a single strap, named after a character in a book back in 1904, is no longer a classic but the must-have accessory in your winter wardrobe.

Re-imagined in two-tone shades, with a pointed toe, in patent leather, triple-strapped and with varying heel heights, the high street is awash with a myriad of styles this season. Below, our fashion director's favourites and how to style them...

The Tweedy Ones

Cult label Charles & Keith is having a major moment with a collection of runway-inspired styles at amazingly affordable prices. Their tweed ankle-strap Mary Janes look Chanel-chic with blue jeans, a romantic blouse and statement pearl earrings.

The Red Patent Ones

If you only buy one pair of Mary Janes, make them a glossy red or burgundy patent pair and match your tights to create an elegant tonal effect that will elongate your legs. Wear with a gray cashmere sweater and matching pleated skirt for a preppy vibe that lets your legs do the talking.

The Cream Evening Ones

A high-heeled Mary Jane in a luxe cream leather is a great evening option. Wear them with matching cream or black pointelle tights and a taffeta puffball skirt. Add a statement striped sweater for a laidback look, or with a silk shirt or velvet blazer for something more elevated.
