Strictly fans astonished as they realise star who speaks on theme tune - plus link to Peter Andre
Strictly Come Dancing has been dazzling our TV screens every weekend with it's glitzy line-up of celebrities battling it out on the ballroom dance floor alongside their pro partners in the show's special 20th anniversary series. But Strictly wouldn't be so iconic without it's worldly-recognisable theme tune. Despite listening to the theme tune at least twice a week from September - December, when the BBC dance competition runs, there’s every chance you never had any idea who was responsible for the legendary 'hey!' - the unknown voice which calls out throughout the song.
A recent TikTok from British actor Matt Berry – best known for his work in like Garth Merenghi’s Dark Place, What We Do In The Shadows and The IT Crowd – revealed he was responsible for voicing the song’s lyrics.
During the 2021 PaleyFest footage, filmed during a virtual What We Do In The Shadows panel, comedian Matt revealed: "Are you aware of a show called Dancing With The Stars?

"So, Dancing With The Stars, the theme goes 'ba-ba-da-da-da-da-dah, dum da dum da dum, HEY!' And there's a guitar line that’s playing underneath it - I’m playing the guitar line, and it’s me that goes, 'HEY!'" The Dancing With The Stars theme tune is the same as Strictly’s as the BBC licences the format across the world.
According to Pop Culture, Dan McGrath, who wrote the iconic theme song with Josh Phillips - is friends with Matt and they’ve worked on TV shows like House Of Fools together. Dan and his co-writer Josh also wrote the theme tunes for Take Me Out, A League of Their Own, All Star Mr & Mrs and Alan Carr: Chatty Man.
On an online forum on DigitalSpy, Strictly fans debated the the surprising revelation. One revealed: "Have you ever wondered who does the 'HEY!' in the opening credits for Strictly? It's Matt Berry, star of the IT Crowd and What We Do In the Shadows (amongst other things).
"If you're a fan of Matt like I am, once you know this piece of information, you cannot unhear him! I found out during the summer, and now I laugh every time I watch the titles."
Another replied, writing: "He's good mates with the composer, Dan McGrath, so it's entirely possible." While a third shared: "I've just played back the theme tunes to both Strictly and DWTS and they seem to be the same voice. Who knew! Love it. I've been a fan of Matt Berry's since his Garth Marenghi and IT Crowd days- such a distinctive voice."
The show's iconic theme tune also has a surprisingly link to popstar Peter Andre. In his OK! column in September, he revealed which stars he is routing for in the current 2024 Strictly line-up.
Plus, he explained his famous connection to the Strictly theme tune. Peter said: "I’m rooting for Nick Knowles and JB Gill, just because I know them more, but everyone will be amazing.
"The man who owned my house before me was the person who wrote the theme tune. He told me the exact spot where he wrote it – which is in my garden. I couldn’t believe it!"
