Sophie Turner's 'Joan' outfits are giving us all the '80s style inspo

From Kristen Bell's outfits in Nobody Wants This to all the fabulous fashion on display in season four of Emily In Paris, we're turning to the silver screen more than ever for style inspiration. And the latest TV show to capture our attention – only to lose it as we pick up our phones to shop online for faux fur coats – is ITV's new series Joan. Starring none other than Sophie Turner, the show is based on the memoir of one of Britain's most notorious thieves, Joan Hannington, who stole millions of pounds worth of diamonds and jewels in the 1980s.

After bingeing all six episodes pretty much as soon as the show dropped at the end of September, we were left with *a lot* of questions. Where is Joan now? What about her daughter? Who was Boisie Hannington? Where do I recognise all the cast from? Can someone explain the ending? And most importantly, where can I get my hands on those amazing '80s outfits, and can I wear them now in 2024?

Good news on those last two. Sophie's Joan outfits are very much of the era but the '80s trend was big news on the autumn winter runways, meaning there are plenty of ways to take inspiration from the character and recreate some of her best looks while bringing them bang up-to-date.

The faux fur coat

We see Sophie rep more than one faux fur coat during the series, and the style is one of the biggest autumn winter outerwear trends thanks to designers including Michael Kors, Louis Vuitton and Givenchy all sending models down the runway swathed in fluffy jackets. We need no further convincing to snap one up, as for design details – opt for brown to tick off another new season trend and channel Joan more accurately in the process.

The safari dress

Endlessly practical, a shirt dress in a neutral camel hue – commonly referred to as a safari dress – is a trans-seasonal workwear hero item, IMO. Add brown leather knee-high boots, and when the mercury drops you could add a roll-neck knit underneath or a slouchy jumper over the top.

The bomber jacket

We love a bomber jacket. Instantly injecting any outfit with a cool, sports luxe factor, their cropped silhouettes and gathered, ribbed hems are great for showing off another '80s style – the high waist trouser.

The gold sequin dress

It was a lewk in the '80s and it's still a lewk now. A gold sequin dress is practically a wardrobe essential, as far as we're concerned. Party season is coming up, ya know...

The trench coat

Speaking of wardrobe essentials, and this one is non-negotiable – a trench coat. We can be found living in ours throughout autumn and spring, those months of the year when you need a jacket that is warm enough for a light breeze but won't have you breaking out in a sweat when you have to dash for the bus, plus manages to be semi-waterproof for the inevitable spontaneous downpour. No small ask, yet a trench coat does it all. And in style too.
