Wimbledon is back.
After the annual All England Club tournament was cancelled for the first time since World War Two due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, it returned with restrictions and a depleted crowed in 2021.
But, after two years, the annual tennis tournament as we know it is back in full swing. From 27 June to 10 July 2022, the verdant pomp of the famed competition returns to SW19 as top tennis players from around the world descend on the South London club.
The tennis tournament, which is usually a staple in the British sporting calendar, regularly attracts famous faces from across the globe, but in particular members of the Royal Family on its very London doorstep.
The All England Club's Wimbledon tournament has long had a close relationship to the Royal Family, with King George VI – the then-Duke of York (and the Queen's father) – even playing played in the doubles tournament in 1926 (they lost in the first round.)
The Queen became patron of the All England Club in 1952, and passed on the patronage to the Duchess of Cambridge in 2016, who has taken to the role like a duck to water.
Whether the Duchess of Cambridge joining the Duke of Kent to present the trophies to winners, or Princess Beatrice attending whilst pregnant with daughter Sienna, there is no doubt that the famed Royal Box will have an actual royal in attendance at least once throughout the two week tournament, if not more.
