Whilst the September 2021 red carpet was awash with silver see-through looks, and Kim Kardashian certainly took home the trophy for best naked dress at this year’s event, the 2022 Met Gala had one discernible trend throughout: there was a host of black sheer and lace outfits on the red carpet.

When it comes to the Met Gala red carpet, the trends tend to reflect the theme. Opera gloves, corsets and crystals, for instance, align perfectly with this year’s theme of ‘gilded glamour’ for the Metropolitan Museum of Art – Costume Institute’s 2022 exhibition, In America: An Anthology of Fashion.

Whilst there's nothing particularly ‘gilded’ or 19th century about black gowns and outfits that show a little skin through lace and sheer fabric, modern designers seem to have used the style to combine contemporary fashion with their own take on the Met Gala theme.

Even from the very start of the Met Gala red carpet, Vogue’s red carpet co-host for the evening Vanessa Hudgens kicked things off in a gothic getup by Moschino that showed her pants and featured strategically placed embroidery across her chest.

From there, a steady stream of sheer black, lace looks covered the red carpet. Maude Apatow in Miu Miu, Karlie Kloss in Givenchy, and Phoebe Dynevor in Louis Vuitton, all wore similarly sheer, black ensembles with lace detailing for the annual fundraising event.

It wasn’t just the Met Gala red carpet, the trend merged into the after parties too, where celebrities are able to flex their muscles when it comes to both personal and modern style. Kendall Jenner swapped out her voluminous Prada train for an underwear-exposing black lace outfit for the after party at Zero Bond, whereas TikTok star Addison Rae opted for the sheer fabric side of the trend.
