Princess Charlotte’s Christening Announcement: The Likely Godparents Revealed
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s youngest child will be christened on July 5 – but the question on everyone’s lips is who will her godparents be?
On Sunday 5 July, Princess Charlotte will be christened in a private ceremony at St Mary Magdalene Church, Sandringham.
The royal baby will be two months old at the time, and no doubt dressed in a traditional christening gown – like Prince George was on his big day in October 2013.
It’s tradition for members of the royal family to be christened in this particular gown, originally handcrafted by Scottish dressmaker Janet Sutherland in 1841.
George wore a brand new replica of it and we hazard a guess that little Lottie will, too.
But what of her godparents? Kate and Wills went against tradition with George and chose seven of their best friends to look out for their son – rather than foreign royals and aristocrats.
The highly privileged list included university pals William van Cutsem, Emilia Jardine-Paterson and Oliver Baker, their long-standing private secretary Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, Prince Charles’ friend Earl Grosvenor and Princess Diana’s pal Julia Samuel.
In fact the only royal family member to be named one of George’s godparents was Zara Tindall – who isn’t technically even a princess.
It’s looking like Charlotte could have as many as six godparents. Wills’ cousins Beatrice and Eugenie are currently the top choices, which would make sense as they missed the boat with Prince George.
Also on the list of potential godmothers is Pippa Middleton at 1/1 and Tiggy Pettifer, who used to be Wills’ nanny, at 6/4.
The race to be godfather looks more open with William’s cousin Peter Phillips at 1/1 and Kate’s friend Sam Waley-Cohen at 6/4.
Either way, we won’t have to wait long to find out who the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge choose as their daughter’s godparents. George’s were announced just ahead of his christening so it’s likely that Charlotte’s will be too.
But then again, we’re still waiting on that first photo of Charlotte at home…
