Ahead of his new documentary on ending homelessness, Prince William has shared previously unseen photos of himself and his mother, Princess Diana, via The Passage – a charity focussed on building a world where everybody has a home.

The series of images were posted on The Passage's Instagram account and show a young William and his mother, along with Prince Harry, visiting The Passage's centre and chatting with guests, along with the future king playing chess.

Captioning the post, The Passage wrote: "This Wednesday, The Passage will feature in a two-part @itv and @itvxofficial documentary following our Royal Patron, Prince William’s new initiative – @homewardsuk 🎬.

"Prince William: We Can End Homelessness will give an exclusive, behind the scenes look at the first year of this five-year programme; whilst presenting our shared mission to change perceptions and demonstrate that it is possible to end homelessness. Our Chief Executive, Mick Clarke commented: 'For William this is personal. He has a long history of involvement on this issue, back to when his mother took him to The Passage when he was 11… That is where the genesis of @HomewardsUK came from.'."

Ahead of the show's release, Prince William has also spoken about how spending time at The Passage in his youth – and throughout adulthood – has shaped his world view and inspired him to take on the cause of ending homelessness, saying, "My mother took me to The Passage; she took Harry and I both there. I must have been 11 at the time, maybe 10. I had never been to anything like that before, and I was a bit anxious about what to expect."

He added (when addressing the criticism he's faced for taking up this mission given his immense privilege), "I think if I answered every critic, I'd be here all day. But you know, criticism drives you forward. I think it's right to question but I think, ultimately, we are pushing forward to deliver change and hope and optimism into a world that frankly has had very little of it for a long time.

"I hope I can bring something that’s not been done before."

Prince William: We Can End Homelessness is on ITV1 on 30 and 31 October at 9pm
