Prince William says he is "so proud" of Kate through cancer treatment
The Prince of Wales opened up about what he called the "hardest year of his life" during an interview with reporters to mark the end of his South Africa visit on Thursday (7 November).
Prince William was asked how he'd been in a year where both his wife, the Princess of Wales and his father, The King had been diagnosed with cancer.
In a rare moment of public candidness, Prince William admitted, "It's been dreadful. It's probably been the hardest year in my life. So, trying to get through everything else and keep everything on track has been really difficult."
He added that, "from a personal family point of view, it's been brutal.”
However, the Prince also said how "proud" he was of both Kate and The King in how they have coped with the challenges their diagnoses have brought.
"I'm so proud of my wife, I'm proud of my father, for handling the things that they have done," he said.
The Prince of Wales was also asked how he was finding the increased responsibility of his new title since his father became King. “It’s a tricky one. Do I like more responsibility? No," he told reporters.
However, he said he does enjoy, "the freedom that I can build something like Earthshot," referring to the environmental award he set up, which recognises and funds projects creating solutions to climate issues.
The 2024 Earthshot prize is the reason Prince William has been visiting South Africa, the location hosting this year's awards.
