Lady Gaga FaceTimed Prince William for candid mental health chat
A day after Prince Harry opened up about his mental health issues, his brother is doing the same.
Prince William teamed up with Lady Gaga as part of Heads Together: the mental health initiative started by the royal brothers and the Duchess of Cambridge.
The unlikely pair hopped on a FaceTime call to talk about their personal issues and encouraged others to do the same.
Gaga, who revealed she suffered with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in an open letter last year, spoke about how she feels waking up every day.
“There’s a lot of shame attached to mental illness. You feel like something’s wrong with you,” the star said. “And in my life, I go, ‘Oh my goodness, look at all these beautiful and wonderful things that I have, and I should be so happy.'”
“But you can’t help it if in the morning when you wake up, you are so tired, you are so sad and you are so full of anxiety and the shakes that you can barely think. But it was like saying, ‘This is a part of me and that’s okay.'”
Prince William went on to talk about ending the “stiff upper lip” culture that permeates Britian in particular, stating that he wants George and Charlotte to grow up in a world where they can talk about their emotions.
“It’s time that everyone speaks up and really feels very normal about mental health. It’s the same as physical health,” the royal commented. “Just having a conversation with a friend or family member can really make such a difference.”
“It’s really important to have this conversation and know that you won’t be judged. It’s so important to break open that fear and that taboo which is only going to lead to more problems down the line.”
William also wanted to make clear that everyone can suffer with mental health issues – whether you’re deemed as successful or not.
Towards the end of the video, the pair made plans to meet in the UK in October to find further ways of working together to remove the stigma surrounding mental health.
“We have to make the strongest, most relentless attempt we can to normalise mental health issues,” Gaga finished.
The conversation comes immediately after Prince Harry revealed William helped him seek counselling following the death of his mother in 1997.
He agreed to the rare personal interview in a bid to “encourage people to have that conversation because you will be surprised how much support you get and how many people literally are longing for you to come out.”
