The Prince of Wales has shared an honest update about the past year, revealing it has been “the hardest year of my life.” This year, both his wife, Kate Middleton and his father, King Charles were diagnosed with cancer.

When asked how his year had been after a difficult time for all the family during his visit to South Africa, Prince William said: "It's been dreadful. It's probably been the hardest year in my life. So, trying to get through everything else and keep everything on track has been really difficult.” In a video message in September, Kate revealed she had finished her chemotherapy treatment, and King Charles has now returned back to public duties.

Speaking on how proud he is of both of them, William said: "I'm so proud of my wife, I'm proud of my father, for handling the things that they have done. But from a personal family point of view, it's been brutal.”

The announcement of Kate and Charles’ cancer diagnoses came within just one week of each other. In February, Buckingham Palace announced that the King had cancer and would begin treatment. Just a week later, it was announced that Catherine was undergoing chemotherapy after a cancer diagnosis.

Earlier this week, William gave a rare update on Kate’s cancer, as he said: "She's doing really well thanks. And hopefully she is watching tonight, so cheering me on. She's been amazing this whole year. I know she will be really keen to see tonight be a success."

William has also taken a piece of home with him to South Africa, as he was spotted wearing a ‘Taylor Swift inspired’ friendship bracelet with the word ‘Papa’ written on it. Papa is the adorable name his three children, Prince George , Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis refer to their father as.

It was first revealed that the children called the Prince ‘Papa’ during Mothers Day in 2021, where Kensington Palace released cards that the children had written to their late grandmother, Princess Diana. "I am thinking of you on Mother's Day. I love you very much," Charlotte wrote in the card. "Papa is missing you. Lots of love."

During a touching tribute to Prince William this Fathers Day, George, Louis and Charlotte sent a special message to their dad alongside a new photo of the family, which read: "We love you, Papa. Happy Father’s Day G, C & L.” It marked the first time a social media post had been signed off by the royal siblings.
