Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are to give an intimate interview with TV superstar Oprah Winfrey.

The couple are now settled in the US, having bought a home in California, following their dramatic exit from their senior royal roles in January 2020.

A year on, with a second baby on the way and a string of successful court battles behind them, the couple will talk about their lives now, starting with a one on one between Meghan and Winfrey.

The two women, who have formed a friendship over the last three to four years, will talk about Meghan's life in the Royal Family, her marriage, motherhood and philanthropic work.

Then Prince Harry will join the women for a further chat about life in California.

The interview is understood to be being filmed this week and will air first in the US on the evening of 7 March.

But it is sure to be watched worldwide as Harry and Meghan discuss their future plans.

A snap YouGov poll on Tuesday found that 46% of Britons thought the interview was "inappropriate".

But nearly three in ten, 29%, thought it was appropriate for them to tell of their experience in palace walls. A quarter did not know.

The couple announced they would be producing documentaries, scripted series and children's programmes for Netflix in a huge deal in September 2020 - but 64% of Britons said they were not interested in watching any of their shows.

Then in December they announced a second big deal, with Spotify to make podcasts.

Those seemed equally unpopular in the UK, with only 7% of people saying they would listen.

Winfrey, 67, has become a friend of the Duchess of Sussex over the last few years, and attended the wedding of Harry and Meghan in May 2018.

She sent her signature present for Archie, their first son, and Meghan sent Winfrey a basket of lattes from the company she made her first investment in.

Winfrey has previously come to the defence of the royal couple, saying Meghan was treated unfairly, and praising some of their decisions, like delaying the photocall with Archie for two days.

Of their decision to step back, she said: "When a person has sat and thought about what is the best decision I’m going to make for my family and then he makes that decision, none of us have any right to say anything about that. That’s his decision for his family."

There has been mixed response to the couple's decision to choose an interview with Winfrey, with reports it will lead to the end of their remaining patronages, which the Queen had allowed them to keep despite no longer representing her.

The interview will be broadcast in the US on 7 March.
