Oscars 2022: Rihanna's bump to nearly nude gowns, all the fashion moments you missed

As always, all eyes were on the Oscars red carpet outside the Dolby theatre in Hollywood on Sunday for the 94th Academy Awards ceremony. Stars descended in their masses to celebrate the brightest the silver screen has to offer.

But after two years of pared-back celebrations, and hundreds of stunning red carpet looks to see, it's hard to catch it all. Plus, there are all the many glamorous after parties, where celebrities change into their dancing outfits to let their hair down, to catch up on too.

Here’s everything you may have missed at the 2022 Oscars:

Beyoncé wowed in not one, but two outfits

Beyoncé may have missed out on the Best Original Song award for her song ‘Be Alive’ from King Richard, but her two looks for the evening certainly won in the style stakes. Not only did Queen B look resplendent in sunshine yellow on the red carpet, but her performance outfit was impeccable as always, too.

The red carpet Valentino haute couture gown featured a dramatic floor-length cape that she coordinated with elbow-length opera gloves, whereas her custom glittering feathered David Koma dress for her performance, was teamed with a diamond-encrusted garter.

The rare performance from the ‘Crazy in Love’ singer also featured a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance from her eldest daughter, Blue Ivy, as she joined her mother among the dancers on stage.

The songstress later changed into a show-stopping sheer embellished gown by Celia Kritharioti Couture for her and Jay-Z's annual Oscars Gold After Party.

Oscar winner Will Smith was joined by his children for the after party

Following an eventful time at the 94th Academy Award ceremony earlier in the evening, Best Actor award-winner Will Smith was joined by his stylish family for the Vanity Fair Oscars After Party.

Earlier in the evening, Smith was seen to spontaneously storm the stage and hit Chris Rock in the face after the comedian made a joke about his wife's short haircut, comparing her shaved hairstyle to Demi Moore's buzzcut in G.I. Jane.

The family appeared to show a united front at the after party, and showed up in the style stakes, too. Smith has since apologised to Chris Rock and the Academy for his actions.

Baby Bumps stole the show

Sophie Turner stepped onto the Oscars red carpet for her first public appearance with a baby bump since rumours of a second pregnancy with husband Joe Jonas started circulating.

The Louis Vuitton ambassador opted for a bright red gown by the brand which featured a gently pleated empire line peplum waist, highlighting her bump without screaming “maternity”.

Elsewhere, Rihanna, who has so far chosen to show her bump at every opportunity (as she should) with pregnancy jewellery and crop tops, did so again at Jay-Z’s Oscars after party.

The black organza turtleneck gown by Valentino featured an oversized bow at the back and a long organza skirt with a sequined train. The diaphanous top of the gown was in keeping with the rest of Rihanna’s maternity wardrobe and allowed her burgeoning baby bump to show.

The 'Umbrella' hitmaker later took to Instagram to share images of her cradling her bump at Jay-Z and Beyoncé's annual Oscars Gold Party, captioning the snaps "me and my date for Oscar Gold Party #bump22", referencing her impending due date.

Kendall took a leaf out of Kim’s playbook with larger-than-life Balenciaga

Model Kendall Jenner took a leaf out of her older sister, Kim Kardashian’s fashion playbook in an all-black bold Balenciaga number. The Kardashians have held a close relationship with the design house for some time, and Kim chose the French fashion house for her avant-garde Met Gala look in September 2021.

Kendall picked a voluminous gown, representative of the brand’s lauded history, with a sleeveless detail that was highlighted as she swept her newly dyed hair into a sleek ponytail for the star-studded after party.

While Kim went bold in blue

Kim Kardashian forewent the recent trend of her wearing all-black outfits to public occasions, instead opting for a vibrant turquoise Balenciaga gown. It was, however, still in keeping with the reality TV star’s figure hugging style, and of course, wouldn’t be a true Kim Kardashian look without a pair of sunglasses.

Zendaya swapped her sparkling look for a tux and leather tie

Zendaya’s show stopping Valentino look on the Oscars red carpet wasn’t her only look turning heads at the 94th Academy Awards. The Euphoria star slipped into sharp suiting by Sportmax as the evening continued at the Vanity Fair Oscars After Party.

She paired her tailored trouser suit with a purple shirt and leather tie for the after party occasion, adding a touch of smokey eye shadow to her silver eye look from the red carpet and slicking her hair into a side part,

And Kristen Stewart swapped her shorts tux for a lace Chanel dress

While Zendaya went from gown to tux, Kristen Stewart switched up her suited shorts look from the red carpet for a floor-length lace lingerie-style gown by Chanel Haute Couture at the Oscars after party.

The Best Actress nominee scooped up her hair into a loose bun to keep the look – which could easily err on the side of twee with its lace, buttons and bow embellishment – cool and contemporary.

Support for Ukraine

From the Time’s Up movement to protesting strict dress codes for women, the red carpet has long been a platform for star’s to express their opinions and make a stand. At the 94th Academy Awards, presenter Jason Momoa appeared to show his support for the people of Ukraine by sporting a pocket square in the blue and yellow of the Eastern European country.

Elsewhere, Jamie Lee Curtis, Diane Warren and Youn Yuh-Jung all prominently sported blue ribbons in support of refugees, whilst Benedict Cumberbatch wore a Ukrainian flag pin badge.

Sustainability had a starring role

As sustainability in fashion and film becomes impossible to ignore, more and more stars are making conscious choices with their outfit choices for big red carpet events such as the Oscars.

Uncharted star Tati Gabrielle and West Side Story actress Paloma Garcia Lee joined a long line of high profile celebrities as Red Carpet Green Dress Global ambassadors at this year’s Academy Awards.

Elsewhere, Kirsten Dunst opted for a gown from the Christian Lacroix archive for her Oscars look, showing that choosing vintage can still make a huge impact on the red carpet.

Lady Gaga’s Liza Minelli-inspired tuxedo look, worn to present the Best Picture award with the Cabaret icon, was reportedly already in the back of her wardrobe. Gaga wore a “liquid lamé” tuxedo jumpsuit created by Ralph Lauren for the star’s Jazz & Piano residency at Las Vegas’s MGM Grand in 2019.

Julia Fox’s wild after-party look

And the Oscar for most off-beat look goes to… Julia Fox’s full-length black leather gown by Han Kjøbenhavn featured what appeared to be a hand wrapped around the neck, also in leather, but it was her accessories that really caught viewers attention.

Speaking to Catt Sadler, the co-host of the Vanity Fair party’s coverage, Fox claimed that her rectangle clutch bag was adorned with real “human hair”. Fox added: “I’m having fun and that’s all that matters.”
