A woman with an unusual name has revealed that she hates introducing herself to strangers because they think she's lying. Taking to Reddit to discuss "embarrassing" monikers, she explained that her mum took inspiration from a common fruit - and she's even adopted a nickname to avoid awkward situations.

She wrote on the online forum: "My name is Apple. I only hate my name when I’m around strangers because they stare (for example: doctor's office) or when I introduce myself because people always think I’m lying. In high school everyone started calling me Apps and I loved it." After hearing her daughter complain, the mum claimed that Apple is a popular name in her home country, Laos.

The daughter added: "I think it becomes strange since I was born the US so it got translated. The only other person I know named Apple is Gwyneth Paltrow’s daughter."

When someone commented that they didn't think the name was "that weird" and they wouldn't think she was lying if they met her, the woman replied: "I’m glad I wouldn’t have tried to convince you. It’s usually a headache when it came down to that."

She wasn't the only one with a unique name, as other social media users said they could relate to Apple. One said: "My name is Tiger, just imagine my troubles. Be glad that you're just an Apple, stay that way."

Someone else said: "I love the name Apple! Apps are perfect too. My cousin's step-sister has the same name and probably got all the looks too growing up but I would definitely name a kid that," while a third explained: "I used to absolutely hate my name, and was insistent that I was going to change it as soon as I turned 18. My name is Rave. I love it now and am so glad I didn’t change it."

Another added: "My name is Siri, so that’s been....problematic. I still love my name, but it would be great if everyone’s phones didn’t go off when someone tries to greet me."

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow famously named her daughter Apple, who she welcomed in May 2004 with ex-husband Chris Martin. She previously said that she loves the name and can't imagine her being called anything else.

Revealing that it was Coldplay star Chris who picked it, she said: "Her dad came up with the name and I fell in love with it,” she said. “I thought it was original and cool. I can’t imagine her being called anything else.”

And appearing on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2004, she explained: "When we were first pregnant, her daddy said, ‘If it’s a girl I think her name should be Apple.’ It sounded so sweet, and it conjured such a lovely picture for me, you know. Apples are so sweet and they’re wholesome and it’s biblical, and I just thought it sounded so lovely. “

Speaking about the controversy the name caused at the time, she continued: "I found it surprising, because there are people named Rose or Lily or Ivy or June. You know, lots of pretty nouns."
