Midlife dating tips as viewers praise My Mum Your Dad: 'Truly heartwarming'
My Mum, Your Dad, the new dating show, dubbed "middle-aged Love Island", got underway last night and some viewers say they are already "obsessed".
Hosted by Davina McCall, the programme follows a group of single parents who have been nominated by their grown-up kids for a second chance at finding love in midlife.
But unbeknownst to the parents, their kids will be watching their every move and will have the opportunity to play matchmaker and decide their mum or dad’s dating fate.
The first episode saw many curious viewers tune in, with many sharing their reactions to the show on social media.
"Love love LOVING My Mum, Your Dad so far - this is more like it," one fan wrote on X, formerly Twitter. "Beats the socks off of fake Love Island - Yes Davina for this idea."
Another shared how "impressed" she was with the new series, declaring it "truly heartwarming".
"Already obsessed with my mum, your dad," yet another viewer added.
So why is there such a vested interest in the show?
According to Dr Becky Spelman, relationship expert, psychologist and founder of Private Therapy Clinic there may be several reasons why My Mum, Your Dad has struck a chord with viewers including a switch in how we view midlife dating.
"In the past, there was a perception that dating and finding a partner was primarily a pursuit of the younger generation," she explains. "However, as societal norms have evolved, there is now an increasing recognition that the desire for companionship and romantic relationships does not diminish with age."
Dr Spelman suspects the show is also tapping into a need for representation and relatability for those looking for love at in middle age and beyond.
"By showcasing relationships and dating among older adults, shows like My Mum, Your Dad provide relatable content to a wider range of audiences," she continues. "This allows older individuals to see themselves represented on screen and may help combat ageist stereotypes that suggest dating and romance are exclusively for the young."
The need for emotional connection and companionship, doesn't stop as we age either.
"Generally in life, and particularly when people age, they may face life changes such as retirement, the loss of a spouse, or an empty nest, which can make the companionship of a partner even more desirable," Dr Spelman adds.
"Shows like My Mum, Your Dad may help to spark conversations about these issues and to promote a sense of community among older individuals."

Embrace self-confidence
Believe in yourself and embrace your worth. "Confidence is attractive and can make a positive impression on potential partners," Dr Spelman advises.

Keep an open mind
And explore new possibilities. "Don't limit yourself to a specific type or set of expectations," Dr Spelman adds.
Try a dating agency
And make sure it is a member of the Association of British Dating Agencies. "Internet and mobile dating apps have their place, but a good dating agency will do thorough checks to make sure that people really are who they say they are – that they are not married, that they look like their photos and that they are not lying about their age, height, size or occupation," explains Karen Mooney, CEO and founder of Sara Eden.
"You will also be coached through the experience by an experienced professional who will help you find someone with the same life goals and values," she adds.
Eden says most of her clients are in the 50 plus age group and over. "We even have members in their 80s!"
Find an age-appropriate dating site
There are several UK dating sites that cater to people in midlife. "These can be a great starting point for meeting like-minded individuals in midlife who are also looking for companionship or a romantic relationship," Dr Spelman adds.
