My Life In Fashion: Law RoachPaul Gonzales

As the world's first self-declared ‘image architect’, there's not much Law Roach doesn't know about style. The Chicago native is the man behind some of Hollywood's most successful and enduring fashion evolutions — Celine Dion and Zendaya, for instance — and now is sharing his knowledge in a new book, How to Build a Fashion Icon, so that we can all apply a special spoonful of the Law-approved for ourselves.

Roach recently sat down with ELLE UK to talk about his life in fashion, from childhood favourites to how to wear first-class pyjamas outside of an aircraft. How? With confidence, of course.

'Dressing Celine Dion in the Vetements Titanic sweatshirt changed people’s perspective on who she was. Before I met her and spent time with her, I had no idea she was that girl. She saw it and said "I want to do it now."

'The greatest gift about working in fashion is that you do get to be whoever you want to be. We celebrate individuality and we celebrate authenticity.

'My most used item is actually a black Nylon Nike skirt that is a power piece for me. I’ve had it for about five years and always get compliments. I can wear it with trainers, or dress it up with a boot. It always looks chic.

'My introduction to style was going to church with my grandmother. That was a runway show — these women coming together in celebration. I later learnt it was called Sunday best.

'I first bought an Hermès Haut à Courroies bag in Paris in 2017. It was such a big deal, because I’d dreamt of having one for so long. I took myself to dinner and had my bag in the seat across from me to look at it. I realised that buying things can mean so much more than just having a new bag.

'Rihanna is the most naturally stylish person I know. It’s girls like her and Chloë Sevigny that have this natural ease about their fashion choices. Whether they work with someone [as a stylist] or not, it feels so authentic and real.

'When I retired, I really got into writing my book. It was a time for me to reflect on the moments that had brought me joy –from working with Ariana Grande to that last look with Megan Thee Stallion – without rushing on to the next job.

'After my retirement, I wore a Gucci trench from André Leon Talley’s auction. I was still shaken by the decision to walkaway from my career, and it made me feel powerful, knowing it was owned by a trailblazer. It gave me this extra strength, almost like he was giving me a big hug.

'We all make fashion mistakes but that’s a part of the process of growing.

'I remember having a pair of cowboy boots when I was very little, and can still recall that feeling of never wanting to take them off.

'This is going to sound so bouji, but I’m obsessed with first-class pyjamas from different airlines. I throw on a pair, some trainers, a Chanel jacket and a bag, and people are like "I love your outfit." I’m literally wearing pyjamas, but it’s all about the confidence.'
