King Charles poked fun at his 'sausage fingers' with Prince William

In a heartwarming moment from rehearsals for his Coronation, King Charles can be seen making jokes about his so-called "sausage fingers" sending his son Prince William into fits of laughter. The King's so-called 'sausage fingers' have drawn much attention from eagle-eyed royal watchers over the years - and now the monarch has been seen to joke about them himself.

A BBC documentary about the King revealed a lighthearted moment when Charles joked with William about his swollen hands, while they were rehearsing for the Coronation ceremony. The rehearsal for was aired in Charles III: The Coronation Year, which showed Prince William using his hands to close a small clasp holding a lavish robe around his father.

When William was filmed closing the clasp on his father's robe, he made a cheeky quip to his dad. He said: "On the day, that’s not going to go in." Charles replied with a smile as he said: "No, you haven't got sausage fingers like mine."

Charles has also joked in the past about having "sausage fingers" following a flight to Australia in 2012. And then again, his hands were seen to be swollen while he pulled a pint at the Prince of Wales pub in South London in 2021.

But it's clearly been something the King has learned to contend with over the years as even in a letter to a friend after William was born, Charles reportedly wrote: "I can’t tell you how excited and proud I am. He really does look surprisingly appetising and has sausage fingers just like mine."

Then during the coronation ceremony, William pledged allegiance to the King and kissed him on the left cheek.

Speaking about William, the Dean of Westminster Dr David Hoyle, who officiated during the ceremony at Westminster Abbey, told the documentary: "What is it like for him to watch this happen? He has to be aware that there will come a day when he too will be thinking about facing this challenge."

William tickled Charles' left cheek, making him laugh, then kissed him on the right cheek, but the King asked: "Wasn’t it that side?", pointing to his other cheek.

William made everyone surrounding them laugh as he joked to his dad: "your left cheek is better”, kissing it and giving his face an affectionate stroke.
