Jennifer Aniston talks body-shaming and being the #FreeTheNipple queen
Jennifer Aniston is no stranger to bad press. She has been constantly harassed about being jealous of past relationships’ new flames as well as being the victim of the age-old line: ‘Is Jennifer Aniston pregnant?’
So it’s no wonder the 48-year-old actress stays well away from social media.
In a new interview with Vogue, she says that our reliance on our phones means “we’re missing so much. It’s hard enough being a kid growing but now you’ve added this extra pressure of seeing if someone likes or doesn’t like something you did. We’re creating these man-made challenges and it’s a such a drag.”
Aniston was also labelled the OG (original gangster) of the #FreeTheNipple movement thanks to her ‘Friends’ character Rachel’s preference for no bras.
“Yeah, I don’t know what to say about that! It’s just one of those things, I guess,” she commented. “I wear a bra, I don’t know what to tell ya! And I don’t know why we’re supposed to be ashamed of them – it’s just the way my breasts are! But hey, OG, I’m not going to complain!”
The actress moved on to talk about the body-shaming that so many women face day in, day out.
“I think the problem is the tabloids and the gossip columns taking the human body and putting it in a category. They’re either fat-shaming, or body-shaming, or childless-shaming,” she began.
“It’s a weird obsession that people have and I don’t understand exactly why they need to take people who are out there to entertain you, and rip them apart and bully them? Why are we teaching young women this? It’s incredibly damaging.”
She mentioned the constant harassment by tabloid press over her numerous alleged pregnancies, saying that “she couldn’t hear [that] narrative anymore. I was finally like, ‘this has just got to stop.'”
“If you’re going to walk out and have your nipples showing, or your belly is a little bloated, or you’re not at the weight you want to be – you are perfect no matter what you are and no matter where you are.”
