Here's what to expect from Profhilo: before, during and after
When it comes to aesthetic injectables, we traditionally think of things like botox and dermal fillers. But there are now so many different types of aesthetic treatments that it can be quite confusing which does what.
Take Profhilo, for example. Often coined an 'injectable moisturiser', Profhilo is a treatment where hyaluronic acid (one of the most widely recognised hydrating ingredients there is) is injected into the epidermis in the skin – in order to boost the skin's hydration, plumpness and overall glow.
The downtime is minimal and the results are natural-looking and rejuvenating, so it's easy to see why it's become one of the most popular treatments for people to have – especially ahead of a big event like a wedding.
Of course, there are still many things to consider before getting any kind of injectable aesthetic treatment – so to help you make an informed decision, Women's Health chatted with Julie Scott, Clinical Director of Facial Aesthetics clinic in Essex to tell us everything to expect before, after and during a Profhilo treatment.
What is Profhilo?
'Profhilo is a truly unique injectable skin treatment which uses a patented hybrid molecule of hyaluronic acid. It's injected beneath the epidermis – the skin’s outer layers – where it is clinically proven to enhance the skin’s regenerative and healing properties through a unique regenerative cascade called bio-remodelling.'
How does Profhilo work?
Think of it like a really potent skin serum – that's actually delivered into your skin, rather than sitting on top of the surface. 'The ultra pure hyaluronic acid used within Profhilo is specially formulated to combine high and low molecular weights, which, unlike traditional dermal fillers, allows it to penetrate more profoundly into the skin's layers,' explains Scott.
'This initiates what we call a 'regenerative cascade', yielding a longer-lasting and more visibly rejuvenating effect. Beyond its hydrating and plumping properties, Profhilo also possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities, which can help diminish redness, swelling, and other indicators of skin damage.'
What skin preparation should you do before a Profhilo appointment?
'The most important part of any aesthetic treatment is the consultation with an experienced medical practitioner to ensure that the treatment is clinically indicated for you and they will listen to your questions, guide your expectations, and be fully transparent about the treatment outcomes,' says Scott.
'In preparation for treatment, it's advisable to avoid anti-inflammatory medications, alcohol, caffeine, and vigorous exercise to minimise the risk of bruising.'
What happens during a Profhilo treatment?
'Profhilo is designed to saturate the skin with its regenerative effects in various areas, such as the face, neck, décolletage, and hands, and it's equally effective for body concerns – you can even have it in the arms and abdomen.'
'The injections should be carried out very gently and slowly to minimise discomfort, making a typical 30-minute session a relatively comfortable experience.
The expertise of the practitioner plays a pivotal role, in ensuring the experience is as pain-free as possible.' If you're worried about pain, numbing cream should be offered, but Scott notes that many of her clients actually forego it.
What will you look like straight after? Is there any downtime?
'In a skilled hand, there is very little downtime with this treatment,' says Scott.
'Immediately after the procedure, you might notice some slight redness and some raised areas where the product has been injected – akin to mosquito bites. These are normal reactions and generally resolve within a few hours, if not a day. No massaging of these spots is advised—they'll settle down on their own. To optimise healing, it's wise to take it easy on the workouts and steer clear of high-heat situations for a couple of days. It's all about giving your skin a brief pause to enhance the rejuvenation.'
How long until you see results from Profhilo?
'Profhilo is renowned for its ability to enhance the skin's appearance and diminish the signs of ageing. Clinical studies have shown that the treatment can increase skin hydration, improve skin elasticity, and lessen the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles. As an undetectable injectable, the results you can anticipate include a diffusion of fine lines and wrinkles, coupled with a radiant, luminous healthy glow from the deep hydration it provides to the skin's underlying matrix.'
'Results can often be observed after just the first treatment but the best results are typically seen after a complete course, which includes two treatments spaced four to six weeks apart.'
One of the great things about Profhilo is its capacity to stimulate the body's own natural production of collagen and elastin, meaning your skin can become more hydrated and firmer looking long after you've had the treatment done.
How long does Profhilo last?
'Results from Profhilo typically last for about six months, but this can vary based on individual factors like age and lifestyle,' explains Scott. 'Many of my patients maintain the rejuvenating effects with a second series of treatments, often opting for a touch-up every four months after their initial two sessions. It's a personalised approach, ensuring that the natural-looking enhancement of Profhilo fits seamlessly into their skincare rhythm.
