What we know so far about Bridget Jones' Diary 4
Almost a decade since we last welcomed Bridget Jones to our screens, the fourth Bridget Jones' Diary film is almost here – and we can't wait for its release in February 2025.
The fourth film in the British romantic comedy series will be called Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy, and is based on the novel of the same title by Helen Fielding.
Here's everything we know so far about Bridget Jones' Diary: Mad About The Boy, including the latest on the cast, plot, trailer and release date...
Bridget Jones 4: First look images
As well as the trailer (see more below), Universal Pictures has already released two first look images from Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy. The first sees Bridget with new love interest Roxster, played by Leo Woodall, while the second sees her enjoying a campfire moment with her kids' teacher Mr Wallaker, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Bridget Jones 4: Trailer
On 12 November, Universal Pictures finally shared the first trailer for Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy, showing Renée Zellweger's character juggling life as a widowed single mum to her two young children, following the death of Colin Firth's Mark Darcy, and embracing dating again with a younger man. Expect familiar faces, alongside a couple of new ones, and not forgetting the return of Hugh Grant's Daniel Cleaver, too. Watch it here...
Safe to say, we cannot wait for this.
Bridget Jones 4: Latest updates
Hugh Grant shared an update about the new Bridget Jones film while making an appearance on The Graham Norton Show in October, calling it "very sad". Chatting about the upcoming fourth film, the Daniel Cleaver star said: "As well as being extremely funny, it's very, very sad."
The actor explained that author Helen Fielding – who also wrote the movie script – took inspiration from her own real life tragedy for the latest instalment. "She had a sad story," he said. "She got married to an American screenwriter, she had children and then he died."
Bridget Jones 4: Cast
Of course, we'll see Renée Zellweger back in her iconic role as Bridget, with Hugh Grant returning to the series as Daniel Cleaver. Following the release of the trailer, we now know that Colin Firth will appear in some flashback scenes as Mark Darcy, and that fans will see Emma Thompson reprise her role as Dr Rawlings. Other familiar faces, including Jim Broadbent and Gemma Jones as Bridget's parents, Colin and Pamela, will also return.
Bridget Jones' Diary 4 will welcome lots of new faces to the fourth film too, including Leo Woodall of The White Lotus and One Day fame, and 12 Years A Slave star Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Bridget Jones 4: Plot
The fourth Bridget Jones film is based on the 2013 book of the same name, Bridget Jones' Diary: Mad About The Boy, although it's still unconfirmed how much of the plot will be taken from the book exactly.
The film will see Bridget as a widowed single parent to two young children, following the death of husband Mark Darcy, who begins exploring the world of dating again with a man a couple of decades her junior.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight in May 2024, Hugh Grant revealed that he thinks the script for the fourth Bridget Jones' Diary is the best one yet.
"I think the script for the fourth Bridget is the best one of the four," he said. "In fact, it's one of the best scripts I've read for a long time... It's very sad as well as very funny." He went on to say it will be based on the book, and will explore Bridget bringing up two children alone, "all mixed with Bridget Jones' comedy".
