Escape to the Country host halts search as buyer taken back by feature at Welsh property

Escape to the Country host Sonail Shah stopped a property search and joked "let's go back" after buyers were left blown away at an unexpected detail.

During Friday’s (October 25) episode of the BBC hit show, Sonali was on a mission to help a couple find their dream home in Welsh Borders for a quieter pace of life.

Carpenter Scott and wife Julie, who is a liberian and virtual PA, had set their sights on starting a new life in Wales after living in Epsom Surrey for the past 16 years.

The dance loving couple, who met in 2001, were drawn to the Wye Valley and Monmouthshire but they were open to properties on each side of the Welsh Borders.

The duo had a budget of £620k for a detached family home that had a minimum of three bedrooms, near a village and it was important that there was an outdoor building for Scott to set up his workshop. They also wanted a large garden and land to set up a holiday let business.

Speaking about why they wanted to make the big move, Scott revealed that he is keen to have move space so he can expand his business. He also revealed: “I grew up in a town called Monmouth so I’ve been trying to get back and I’ve finally dragged Julie back here.

Julie admitted that she wasn’t bothered about the view, she added: “I would love somewhere with land or a little stream but I’m not too fussed about the view but as long as we are in nice surroundings.

Sonail set up a number of property viewings and made sure they had everything the pair were looking for but just minutes into one viewing the TV host said: “Lets not see this house.”

Walking onto the drive Julie went on to say: “And a lovely view over there.” Sonail was quick to point out: “And you didn’t even want a view.”

Julie confessed: “I didn’t even want a view. I wasn’t even worried about that but now it's here. Sonail: “Let's go back then and not see this house.”

Despite falling in love with the property, it was the Mystery house that they fell in love with even more.

The property was located on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park and it was under six Miles from the market town of Hay-on-Wye.

The Mystery house is a barn conversion that came with a price tag of £615,000 and had everything the couple was looking for and to make things ever better it was £500k below budget.

Julie said: “It does take your breath away.” She pointed out: “The only negative is that it is in the middle of nowhere but It’s the perfect house.” In the end they revealed that they planned on booking a second viewing for the house.
