Why there was an empty seat in the chapel at Princess Eugenie's wedding
The Queen’s granddaughter Princess Eugenie married her long-term boyfriend Jack Brooksbank at St George’s Chapel in Windsor, on Friday 12 October.
The Queen and senior members of the Royal Family attended the ceremony but viewers noticed the empty seat opposite Princess Eugenie, next to her father, Prince Andrew, the Duke of York.
The vacant spot was also noted at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding in May and many thought it had been reserved in memory of his late mother Princess Diana.
However, it’s simply down to tradition.
Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams, told The Independent: “The seat in front of the Queen is always left empty and she has a favourite seat in St George’s Chapel.”
Her Majesty prefers sitting in the second row, next to her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh.
Protocol also dictates that no one can sit in front of the Queen and obstruct her view.
