EastEnders star broke down crying in food bank saying 'why am I here - I've been on television?'

Ex-EastEnders actress Cheryl Fergison, who played Heather Trott for five years, revealed she was brought to tears in a food bank. The star joined Dermot O’Leary and Cat Deeley on This Morning so far where she opened up about having to turn to her local food bank earlier this year.

Cheryl joined the BBC soap in 2007, and remained in the show until her character was axed in 2012. Cheryl revealed: “My life sort of paralleled her a little bit in some things, including things like going to the food bank, that’s the sort of thing that Heather would have done, I’m sure. It's weird to know that what I portrayed is something that is happening to millions. It shouldn’t be happening but it is.”

Cheryl opened up about the first time she visited a foodbank and described the people who worked there as “little angels”. She then confessed: “They sat me down, gave me a cup of tea [and] I started sobbing. I sobbed and thought, ‘Why am I here? I've been on the television, I've been in people's front rooms but I am actually here now’. You hear these stories, and I've reported on these stories, and I've done these stories, but I am actually here now.”

Cheryl had previously revealed exclusively to OK! that she had been selling scripts from the BBC One soap and other merchandise to "put a roof over [her] head" after being "overlooked" for acting roles. She also said she didn’t want any “trouble” from the soap, but also that the money from that helped pay her bills.

In more positive news, Cheryl announced she’s back and acting this Christmas in pantomime. She shared the exciting news that she will be appearing on stage this December. Cheryl will be playing the role of Fairy Godmother in a production of Cinderella in The Cresset, Peterborough.

Fans were equally happy for Cheryl and rushed to congratulate the star on her new role with one writing: “Aww that is fantastic Cheryl x”. Another added: “Can’t wait!!”, whilst another simply wrote: “Absolutely brilliant”. Cheryl’s son, Alex Saddiqi, 25, will also star in the production.
