Lizzie played by Phoebe Cates
The character of Lizzie was perfectly portrayed by actress Phoebe Cates. Spending her days being undermined by a controlling mother, Lizzie brings Fred to life as the imaginary friend she so desperately wants and needs.
Phoebe Cates was a true queen of the screen during the eighties and nineties. Shooting to fame in classic movies like Gremlins, Gremlins 2 and Fast Times at Ridgemont High, she was always in demand for the most exciting roles.
However these days, Phoebe prefers to stay out of the limelight and opts for a quieter life. Cates married fellow actor Kevin Kline in 1989 and two years later the couple had their first child together.
Three years after that, they welcomed their daughter Greta. Both children are now in their 30’s. The actress has only stepped back into the limelight for brief stints, following her decision to focus on being a mother. She lent her voice to a character in the Lego Dimensions video game and also appeared in the 2001 film The Anniversary Party.
Young Lizzie played by Ashley Peldon
The character of young Lizzie was troubled and vulnerable. She was perfectly played by Ashley Peldon, who was obsessed with her imaginary friend.
These days Ashley is very much still involved in the acting world. Her successful career has seen her appear alongside big name stars such as
and Scarlett Johansson. Her role in movies such as Ghost World and The Crucible have helped her to stay relevant in the industry.
For her role in the TV show Guiding Light Ashley stunned viewers when she became the youngest child star to receive an Emmy nomination. She now has her own candle business called Starring Fragrances and has a masters degree in Psychology.
Fred played by Rik Mayall
Rik Mayall brought the character of Fred to life in the most magnificent and hilarious way. This quirky and energetic character wasn’t afraid to speak his mind, much like actor Rik who so brilliantly portrayed him.
Rik starred in the hugely successful TV show Bottom, alongside fellow actor and friend Ade Edmondson, as well as in The Young Ones. Sadly he passed away in 2014 at the end of 56. The actor suffered sudden heart failure after his regular morning run.
In a statement to press at the time, his wife Barbara Robbin said: "We now know that our darling Rik suffered an 'acute cardiac event' at our home around midday on June 9," she continued: "We always knew that Rik was well-loved but we are all overwhelmed by so many joining us in our grief. "I am sure that you all know Rik's response would be something along the lines of 'Well thanks very much all of you.............now f**k off!!!'"
Janie played by Carrie Fisher
The role of Janie was played by the late great Carrie Fisher. The actress brought humour, sarcasm and her own unique energy to the role.
Fisher was of course famous for playing Princess Leia in the cult classic Star Wars movies. She also had iconic roles in hits like The Burbs, When Harry Met Sally and The Women.
Sadly Carrie Fisher passed away in 2016. The exceptionally talented star was taking a flight from London to LA when she suffered a heart attack. Despite medical professionals doing everything they could, she never regained consciousness.
Polly Cronin played by Marsha Mason
The character of Polly Cronin was one that we all truly loved to hate. Actress Marsha Mason took on the role and made it one of her stand-out performances as this controlling and vindictive mother.
Mason’s career continues to thrive, with recurring acting roles and classic characters. Now aged 81, Marsha Mason has appeared alongside Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda in the popular Netflix show Grace and Frankie.
She has been nominated four times for an Academy Award for Best Actress and has enjoyed classic appearances in shows such as Frasier and Madam Secretary.
