A team of Good Samaritans rescued a dog found lying in the bottom of a dumpster near a Houston housing community.

Residents of the community reached out to volunteers from Fur A Pawsitive Future after noticing the dog on the night of Saturday, March 30.

The nonprofit organization consists of a handful of volunteers who trap cats and then spay or neuter them before returning them to the community.

Despite the fact that the group is feline-focused, they posted on Instagram that they were willing and able to help out a dog in distress.

"While we're all about cats we could not let this poor doggy spend the night in a dumpster," the group wrote on Instagram.

The group also posted a video of the rescue to Facebook, writing: "We're sorry humans failed you, we're glad we were able to help get you out of there. You deserve so much better sweet pup."

In the video, the dog can be seen staring up at his rescuers, but appearing too weak to stand or move.

The volunteers eventually lowered a crate into the dumpster, which the dog climbed into.”

The volunteers then helped to see that the dog got the treatment

The volunteers made sure the dog received medical treatment before handing him off to the BARC animal shelter in Houston, where he is now available for adoption.

Police are investigating the matter, a spokesperson tells PEOPLE.
