Coronation Street onscreen couple in shock split as they file for divorce
In the latest episode of Coronation Street, viewers were completely heartbroken as one of their favourite couples called time on their marriage. In Friday’s show, Ryan Connor (Ryan Prescott) delivered a formal letter to Carla Connor (Alison King) at the factory. The contents of the letter wasn’t revealed straight away, but Carla was visibly shocked and distraught by what she read.
As the episode continued, Ryan discovered the letter was actually Carla's divorce decree absolute from Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) - who left the cobbles last year to sail around the world. Fans were completely floored with most not even realising the couple were filing for divorce.
Viewers took to Twitter, now X, to express their sadness, with one user writing: "Carla and Peter are divorced. #Corrie" accompanied by crying emojis.

Another posted: "Carla and Peter are divorced #Corrie", while another admitted: "I didn't even know that Carla and Peter were getting divorced #Corrie. A fourth wrote: "Peter and Carla’s divorce has came through. #Corrie #CoronationStreet @itvcorrie" with a heart emoji.
Peter and Carla had a complicated relationship, they first got together in 2011 and have been married twice. Their first marriage ended after Peter’s affair with Tina McIntyre (Michelle Keegan) in 2014, but they found their way back together five years later. Their second marriage came to an end last December.

But there might be more romance for Carla on the horizon. After opening the letter, Carla was visibly in a bad mood and was later visited by her DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) went to check on her friend, and the tender scene led to a charged moment between the two women.
Talking about the storyline, Carla star Alison said: "I’m loving working with Vicky [Myers], she’s an absolute trooper and she’s very talented. I'm enjoying seeing their friendship coming through, with this friendship we’re seeing a more vulnerable side in them both, rather than just two very strong women.
"It's nice to see Carla opening up to another woman, rather than it all being intermingled with men. She’s suddenly got somebody around that really gets her. She has that closeness and banter with Ryan at home but with Lisa she can show that vulnerability that she so often hides. Lisa’s so serious but she quite likes it and she doesn't really know why, because in that sense they're polar opposite."
Alison added of her character Carla's confusion: "I think every step of this friendship is taking her by surprise. The closeness between them for Carla comes from concern yet at times she can’t really put her finger on what this is."
