When it comes to candles, I believe we fall into two camps. Camp one: you love candles, but you want yours to last forever, so rather ironically, you don't burn them at all. Ever. Then there's camp two. You also adore candles. So much so that your house smells lovely, yet a new wick barely lasts a month without being burned.

I firmly fall into the latter– I really believe there's no point saving your best for 'what if' moments. You need no special occasion or excuse to indulge in the relaxing ambience of candlelight. Seeing your dining room bathing in a soft glow is enough to take a midweek dinner up a notch, or smelling a waft of sumptuous sandalwood is a quick fire way to feel cosy and relaxed.

That being said, I've come to realise you can have the best of both worlds. Enter: the battery operated candle. The good news is the battery operated candles of 2024 are a far cry from their previous clunkier, more artificial-looking iterations.

How long do battery candles last?

In 2024, battery candles are covered in wax for an ultra-realistic finish, they're suitable for indoor and outdoor use and some even come with a remote control. Yes, really!

And thanks to their LED light, many have a long lifespan and use less power than traditional bulb.

The batteries generally last a good amount of time, too – this luxurious pick from The White Company even features a timer switch with a timeout mode, so you don’t even need to remember to turn it off.

Are battery candles safe?

Better still, battery candles are a safer option than the real deal, thanks to their self-timer option and lack of real flame – making them an ideal option for homes with young children with inquisitive hands.
