When Ariana Grande wore a JW Anderson low-cut leather skater dress, Wicked-coded with its levitating skirt that defied gravity (geddit?), to promote her turn as Saturday Night Live host, we should have guessed her wardrobe for the actual episode of the American late-night sketch show (commonly referred to as SNL) would stick to the same theme.

Following in the likes of Margot Robbie and Zendaya, Ariana has adopted method dressing on the 2024 Oscars red carpet and at the Olympics opening ceremony in a nod to her character. And, with the movie musical set for release next month (!!), there's obvs no better time for some additional promo.

Giving a high fashion twist to Glinda the Good Witch's signature pink princess style, the actress and artist wore not one but two gorgeous gowns that looked as if they'd come straight from the film's costume department.

Sharing a selection of backstage photos from the episode taping on Instagram, Ariana gave her followers a close-up look at both 'fits, starting with a pastel pink frothy tulle creation. The design, from Rodarte's SS19 collection, features a close-fitting bodice wrapped with a satin ribbon tied at the front in a bow and voluminous tulle layers forming exaggerated off-the-shoulder sleeves and a flowing A-line skirt. Ari added satin heeled pumps in the same pale hue along with oversized diamond cluster stud earrings.

Her second look was a vintage Thierry Mugler silk fuchsia mid-length dress. The archival number first debuted on the runway during the 1982 autumn winter collection. With its strapless sweetheart fold-over neckline, corseted boned bodice and gathered bubble skirt silhouette, there's no doubt it made just as much of a statement then as it does now. Ari again opted for coordinating pointed-toe court shoes, adding delicate pearl stud earrings.

A final mention has to go to the last slide in her carousel that shared a look at her in costume as a 16th-century little boy, complete with a copper-coloured bowl haircut. Standing alongside Andy Samberg, the snap is from one of the sketches Ariana starred in during the episode. The entire sketch is available to view on YouTube and we'd definitely recommend you watch ASAP.
