Living in an old, Victorian terrace house certainly has its quirks. One of which happens to be an inability to retain much heat, which, as you can imagine, can be pretty gruelling during the winter months. And last year, my central heating just wasn't cutting it, especially when I found myself working from home on a more permanent basis. So, I decided it was a good idea to invest in a portable heater.

Quick overview

A quick trip to Argos and scan of the heaters available, I landed on this Argos own-brand Challenge 2kW Mechanical Oscillating Tower Fan Heater.

At £55, it's not just super affordable as far as tower heaters are concerned, but it's also easy on the eye — not obtrusive, easy to move from room-to-room and really simple to navigate.

Fast forward a year, I've lost count of the number of guests I've had over that can't believe the heat it produces and how fast it warms a room.

Useful for heating my bedroom before I go to sleep or taking the chill off while I work from home, I truly believe it's worth the purchase. Plus, I'm not alone in this opinion, as it has over 200 five-star reviews, with many describing it as "great value for money".

💸 Reasons to buy

I can't express how fast this little heater heats a room. In less than five minutes, my bedroom reaches a nice and toasty temperature. The oscillating function also allows for better heat distribution, great at heating every corner of a room.

Appearance-wise, this tower heater checks all the boxes with its simple, freestanding design, two control knobs, a vent, and a carry handle. It’s simple yet refined, and not too bulky, so it doesn't impose on any space.

As for the controls, they couldn't be easier to use. There's two dials located at the top of the heater, one for adjusting the temperature, and one for the oscillating mode and airflow (it even has a cool air feature).

Tall ceilings and a lot of things mean my house gets quite dusty, which is another concern with heaters or fans. However, this model doesn’t get nearly as dusty as my old convector heater, meaning the airflow is cleaner.

I love how portable it is, too. The carry handle means I can easily move it from room-to-room whenever I need warmth, whether that's first thing in the morning, while I'm working from home, or just before bed.

Super efficient at heating, I haven't run into a single problem with this heater over the past year, and I can't believe how great a value it is.

Reasons to avoid

This tower fan from Argos delivers on everything it claims to, and is hard to fault. But if I had to point out one thing, it would be the level of noise. This isn't the sort of heater you would leave on overnight, and is designed more for providing bursts of heat, but in doing so it can be a little noisy. Nothing distracting, simply the sound of the fan heating up.

Already selling fast on Argos, be quick to snap up this heater before the cold temperatures really settle in this winter.
