Antiques Roadshow guest 'dumps item and storms off' after disappointing valuation

A couple appearing on Antiques Roadshow once "dumped" their item and "stormed off" after being left disappointed by the experts' valuation. Host Fiona Bruce recalled the awkward moment during an appearance on ITV's Celebrity Catchphrase. Fiona, 59, has hosted Antiques Roadshow since 2008 and has certainly seen some memorable moments over the years. The popular BBC show began in 1979, with guests bringing in various items to be valued by a team of experts.

We've seen some guests leave with huge amounts of cash, while others haven't been so lucky. When quizzed about Antiques Roadshow guests, Fiona admitted one couple's reaction to their item's valuation sticks in her mind.

Celebrity Catchphrase host Stephen Mulhern asked: "We know you as a presenter, as very serious news reader. We know you from Antiques Roadshow as well, of course. Have you ever seen anybody really cheesed off when they bring their item in and they get told it's worth absolutely nothing?"

Fiona laughed: Everyone tells me they love that bit. And yes, I mean, many times." She went on to recall the awkward story to Stephen.

"Some people came along once, a couple and they had an enormous painting. They lugged it along and it took them ages. Eventually the specialist saw it and said £30 maybe, and they were so cross," she said. "They dumped it against a hedge and stormed off."

In the latest series of Antiques Roadshow, the team began their journey at Firstsite Art Gallery in Colchester, Essex and headed all the way to Thirlestane Castle in Lauder in the Scottish Borders. Further stops include Beaumaris Castle on the island of Anglesey, the Botanic Gardens within Belfast, and Pitzhanger Manor and Gallery in Ealing, London.Speaking ahead of the new series, Fiona told the BBC: “A new series of the Antiques Roadshow begins again and I, for one, can’t wait. Travelling the length and breadth of the UK to see what the great British public have pulled out of their attics and off their shelves.

"I know we’ll see items of great quality and value - but I’m always drawn in by a moving personal story too. They are what often stick longest in my memory. And I’m determined to improve my record on Basic, Better, Best. Surely I’ve got to get more of them right this year!”
