  • Kathy Bates, 76, responded to Ozempic allegations after opening up about her 100-pound weight loss.

  • “There’s been a lot of talk,” she said.

  • Bates shared exactly how she lost the weight over the last seven years.

Kathy Bates recently opened up about her 100-pound weight loss and is now responding to allegations that she used Ozempic (a type 2 diabetes medication with the active ingredient semaglutide, which may lead to weight loss) to accomplish that goal. In short, the rumors are partially true.

In September, the Matlock star told Variety that she lost the weight gradually over the last seven years. This week, she clarified to People that she lost 80 pounds thanks to lifestyle and diet changes and called in the help of Ozempic, to lose the final 20 pounds.

“There’s been a lot of talk that I just was able to do this because of Ozempic,” Bates said. “But I have to impress upon people out there that this was hard work for me, especially during the pandemic. It’s very hard to say you’ve had enough.”

Bates continued, adding that she made the decision to lose weight after she was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2017. “I ate because I was afraid, and I ate because it was a FU to my self-esteem,” she said. “[Diabetes] runs in my family, and I’d seen what my father had gone through. He had had a leg amputation. One of my sisters is dealing with it very seriously, and it terrified me. It scared me straight.”

In her efforts, a tip about the mind-body connection and hunger from her niece really helped shift her perspective. “When we’re full, we experience an involuntary sigh,” she said. “I just pushed the plate away.” What she ate changed, too. “I used to eat terribly: burgers and Cokes and pizza,” she recalled. And now, she doesn’t eat after 8 p.m.

As for exercise, her work has kept her pretty active. And the weight loss has given her stamina to bounce around set without taking breaks—which didn’t use to be possible, she said. However, now that her latest project, CBS’ Matlock reboot, has wrapped its first season, she’s concerned about getting enough movement in.“That’s going to be my next thing that I’m worried about because I won’t be on set running back and forth,” she said. “I have a treadmill here at the house, and I might try Pilates.”

Whatever her choice is, it will be hers, and hers only. “People always ask, ‘Don’t you want a trainer?’” she said. “No, I really don’t. I don’t want anybody over my shoulder. It’s just very important to me to keep this going. I don’t want to slip.”
