Diwali, from the Sanskrit word Deepavali, is the Indian festival of lights taking place on Thursday 31st October 2024. It is a five-day celebration that commences with Dhanteras (29th October 2024) and ends with Bhai Dooj (3rd November 2024). Keep reading for everything you need to know about Diwali, including the best Diwali home decoration and craft ideas.

The festival – which usually takes place between mid-October and mid-November during the Hindu month of Kartika but changes date each year – is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains and symbolises the victory of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. Diwali celebrates Rama's defeat of the evil spirit Ravana and his triumphant return to his home.

Although celebrations take place over five days, the third day is regarded as the main day.

The five-day festival is as follows:

1. Dhanteras (Day of fortune)

2. Choti Diwali (Day of knowledge)

3. Diwali (Day of light)

4. Padwa (New Year)

5. Bhai Dooj (Day of love between siblings)
