Choosing tiles can be a bit of a marmite design task. On your journey, you'll likely stumble upon some that are truly perfect, only to find that they would wipe out your budget in one fell swoop. Searching for a budget alternative can be fruitless as you drift further and further away from your dream design.

So when looking to recreate the chic terracotta flooring that has slowly supplanted the checkered floor tiles on our social feeds, we were over the moon to find that all of our favourites used the same £2 tile from Ca'Pietra.

Terracotta tiles have an earthy Mediterranean quality, with a rugged texture that makes them the perfect foil for the sterile materials used in kitchens and bathrooms. Their baked clay colour hasn't quite fit the cooler greys that we've been using in our homes for so long, but the shift towards warmer neutrals and retro browns paves the way for their triumphant return.

The Marlborough Terracotta collection from Ca'Pietra includes 11 different shapes and comes in at around £2 a tile, or £78 per square metre.

While you may not naturally pair their warm and orangey colour with pinks, Megan Robson of @kitandco_ fame has done so in her fabulous panelled bathroom (tour Megan's characterful new-build here), while India Hares (@ourhousedit) has long had Ca' Pietra's terracotta floors in her pink Shaker kitchen. Amira Hashish (@thedesigneditor) used the parquet terracotta tiles in her dining room, which has been clad in plaster and feels reminiscent of a Tuscan villa.

The most popular of Ca'Pietra's 11-tile shapes is the slim parquet, but the chunkier squares look quite fabulous next to the checkerboard shower at Paradise Farm, a chic holiday let in Suffolk available through Kip Hideaways.

Terracotta makes a great companion to natural materials too. Jen Rothbury (@crack_the_shutters) has used her Ca'Pietra tiles alongside wood and marble in a spa-like bathroom. Note too that terracotta tiles are totally water resilient and very easy to clean as long as they are sealed correctly.
