NEIL Reynolds says the “team spirit and togetherness” in the Warrington Rylands dressing room allowed them to pull off a significant FA Trophy shock.

Blues were victorious on the road at National League North giants Scunthorpe United, with their 2-1 victory securing their sport in Monday’s third-round draw.

Matt Regan’s second-half header gave them an advantage they defended manfully at Glanford Park after George Waring had cancelled out Kian Scales’ opener.

And Reynolds insists their spot in the next round, when they could potentially face a money-spinning tie against National League opposition, is fully merited.

“We’ve done the unthinkable,” he said.

“Maybe people looked at this fixture and thought it was a Scunthorpe win all day long, but the team spirit and togetherness we’ve got in that dressing room is second to none.

“We said this week that we’re not here to make up the numbers, we set out to win but for large parts of the game, we had to weather the storm.

“On the balance of play, I thought we were excellent especially in the second half and we deserve our place in the hat.

“That group in there is so amazing to work with. To instill that belief in them, add some extra quality and to give my experience to them is what it’s all about.

“When it goes right, it’s on them and when it goes wrong, it’s on me. Today, it’s gone right and it’s all on them and they deserve their place in the next round.

“We had to deal with what they were good at, which is diagonal balls in key areas. You’re relying on Luke Pilling, who is the best goalkeeper I have seen.

“The way he came and took those balls and in front of him, Clive Smith, Matty Regan and Scott Holding won everything.

“When you play against a team littered with quality, you know they’re going to have a spell but at the end of the day, we’ve won the game.”
