Moriarty seriously injured

Exiled Wales international Ross Moriarty suffered a serious injury amid concerning scenes in France on Friday night.

Moriarty appeared in agony as the game was halted and medics rushed on to the field to tend to him, with anxious team-mates looking on. Moriarty is thought to have suffered a bad ankle injury that is likely to decimate his season after a number of players fell on his twisted leg at the breakdown.

The game was stopped for several minutes and his club, Brive, are awaiting the results of scans to determine the severity, but the signs are not positive amid reports of a broken ankle or leg.

The back rower left the pitch on a stretcher, with his side scraping past Dax 15-13 to sit second in the league table.

Scarlets win again

The Scarlets won for the third time in a row as they beat Zebre 30-8 in Llanelli.

Tries from Tom Rogers, Macs Page, Blair Murray and captain Josh Macleod helped the Welsh team recover from Ben Cambriani’s early score for the Italians to earn the bonus point.

Scarlets took an early lead through Ioan Lloyd’s penalty. But Zebre fought back to take an 8-6 lead courtesy of Geronimo Prisciantelli’s drop goal and Cambriani’s try from Giovanni Montemauri’s superb kick.

Lloyd’s second penalty reduced the deficit to two points and Scarlets then moved back in front when Rogers went over in the corner following a slick move for an 11-8 half-time lead.

Two tries in the opening six minutes of the second half saw Scarlets surge ahead, with Page first bursting clear of the Zebre defence and leaving them trailing in his wake, Lloyd adding the extras.

Murray then went over shortly afterwards after a terrific team move and Macleod crossed for a fourth try from close range after a maul following sustained Scarlets pressure, Lloyd converting the latter.

Zebre, who have failed to win away from home in the competition since January 2021, rarely threatened to add to their tally.

Scarlets comfortably saw the game out to extend their unbeaten run against Zebre to 18 games, winning 17 of them, while also registering a third win in a row in the URC for the first time since February 2023.

Gray says farewell

By Anthony Brown, PA

Veteran Scotland lock Richie Gray will play his final match for Glasgow in Saturday’s United Rugby Championship showdown with Stormers in South Africa.

The 35-year-old second-rower is leaving his hometown club next month to join Japanese side Toyota Verblitz and has been selected in the number five jersey for his farewell appearance.

The match in the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch will be Gray’s 119th for Glasgow across his two spells.

The addition of the lock, who was omitted from the Scotland squad for the autumn internationals, marks one of seven changes to the side that started last weekend’s 28-24 defeat away to the Sharks.

Sione Tuipulotu, who was appointed Scotland captain this week, once again leads Warriors in the absence of injured skipper Kyle Steyn as they bid to subdue a Stormers side buoyed by a 34-19 home win over Munster last weekend.

“The Stormers will provide another stern test for us,” head coach Franco Smith told the Glasgow website. “They look to be hitting top form as they showed in their convincing win over Munster.

“They will also be able to call upon a wealth of international experience and quality, with Springboks and World Cup winners throughout their squad.

“It promises to be another electric atmosphere in front of a passionate crowd. We look forward to the challenge.”

Scott reaches century against Ospreys

By PA Sport Staff

Matt Scott will make his 100th appearance for Edinburgh as they go in search of a third consecutive United Rugby Championship victory away to Ospreys on Saturday.

The 34-year-old centre is in his third spell with the side from the Scottish capital after returning north from Leicester in the summer.

Scott returns to the number 12 jersey as one of seven changes to the side that started last weekend’s 27-8 home victory over Cardiff.

“I’m very happy for Matt and his achievement,” head coach Sean Everitt told the Edinburgh website. “He’s a proud Edinburgh man and embodies everything we want to see in this team, bringing physicality and determination every time he takes to the field.”

Harry Paterson comes in at full-back for his first appearance of the season after injury but his fellow Scotland internationals Darcy Graham, Grant Gilchrist, Ali Price and Pierre Schoeman miss out due to rest protocols as Edinburgh bid to continue their recent resurgence after losing their opening three matches.

“We know it will be a tough match this weekend,” said Everitt. “Ospreys are good at home and will come after us, so we know what to expect.”
