West Ham Fan View: Diafra Sakho deserves his chance against Brighton
West Ham face newly-promoted Brighton tomorrow night with the Hammers, once again, in a ‘must-win’ situation. Brighton are currently 14th in the Premier League following their draw against Everton last week. Here are three things to look out for…
Can we stop conceding late goals?
Yes, our defence has improved in recent games but we are continuing our habit of conceding late goals. Against Manchester United we conceded in the 87th and 90th minute. Against Southampton we conceded in the 93rd minute to lose the game with Newcastle scoring in the 72nd and 86th minute against us. And last week, against Burnley, we conceded in the 85th minute to drop three points.

The red cards in both the Southampton and Burnley games did not help and the opposition team were inevitably going to find more space and create more chances. But we have to find a way to close out games or we will continue to drop easy points and fall down the table.
Will Slaven Bilic go on the defensive or offensive?
Despite the draw, it’s hard to ignore that we did put in a good performance last week. Andy Carroll’s red card changed the game and there is little reason for Slaven Bilic to make major changes to the team. But he does have a big decision to make.

Will Bilic make a like-for-like change with Diafra Sakho coming in for the suspended Andy Carroll? Sakho has started twice this season, with both starts coming in the Carabao Cup and he has scored on both occasions. Yet he is still to start in the Premier League, coming off the bench 7 times. Or will Bilic go more defensive and bring in Pedro Obiang who came on against Burnley? We are at home tomorrow night and our best performances this season have been when Bilic has played an attacking line-up. Sakho has waited for his chance this season and Bilic should start him tomorrow night.
Striker worries?
Carroll will be missing tomorrow’s game through suspension and we may be without Javier Hernandez given that he ‘underwent a scan on Tuesday after pulling up in training’ (Sky Sports News). Should Hernandez not make the squad, we only have one striker in Sakho so will Bilic take a risk and call up 20 year old Toni Martinez?
Martinez was signed from Valencia and he has a stunning goalscoring record with 23 goals in 26 games for the U23 side. He also scored a hat-trick against Manchester United’s U23 last weekend. We have already seen Bilic put his faith in Declan Rice. Will Martinez be the next player to get his chance?
