Watford 2-0 West Ham. David Moyes’ first game in charge ended in defeat and we stay in the relegation zone. Here are three talking points from the game…

The January transfer window will be crucial

We are in a relegation battle and we do not appear to be escaping this anytime soon given our performance today. Our summer signings have not had the impact that we would have liked and we may need new additions. But this time, we cannot afford to get it wrong.

The past few seasons have shown the importance of the January transfer window for the teams that are struggling. There was little creativity from our midfield today with three defensively-minded players starting. We need a player that can create from midfield or we face being too reliant on Manuel Lanzini. When he does not play well, which is not often, we barely look like scoring. Could we also see Moyes move to sign a centre-back to help solve our defensive issues?

Change will take time, but is there enough?

Moyes has been put in an extremely difficult situation and it is clear that we will not change our performances overnight. Many of our players were on international break and Moyes has not had enough time to work with the full team.

Yes, today’s performance was very poor and it was another loss but it was always going to be a tough game. Moyes does need time to implement his style of play, away from Slaven Bilic’s, and then we can assess him. There were signs of improvement in today’s game and we should have scored at least two goals but time is not something that Moyes has on his side given our current situation. We have to find a way to get results, and quick.

Crucial points were lost

Given our upcoming fixtures, we simply had to get a result from this game. We are approaching December which is always difficult but our fixture list makes it that much worse. We face Manchester City, Chelsea, and Arsenal in our first three games of the month. Let’s not forget that we also face Tottenham at the end of the month. Should we lose either of our next two games, it would not be a surprise to see us bottom of the Premier League going into the new year.
