Tottenham Fan View: Time for Daniel Levy to show real ambition in the transfer market
Top Shelvey
All hail the three points; cleanser of souls, destroyer of self-doubt. Had Rafael Benítez been the architect of another famous Newcastle win over Tottenham on Sunday, parts of the Spurs community would’ve mutated into a toxic swampland. Indeed, if it weren’t for Jonjo Shelvey, the Magpies’ knuckleheaded captain, things might’ve been quite different.
Instead, there’s a feeling of cautious optimism amongst Tottenham fans. Anxiety over the lack of signings subsided, for now, with the arrival of a potential new star. Who needs Kyle Walker— or Kieran Trippier for that matter —when the former’s near-namesake looks just as talented. Kyle Walker’s gone; long live Kyle Walker-Peters. Danny Rose’s septic comments pushed aside as Ben Davies makes his solid, goal-scoring entrance.

Wembley could still be a disaster, but at least it looks as if our handy away form might continue from last season. For all the talk of the fortress White Hart Lane, Spurs were undefeated in 15 away fixtures in 2016/17. Even the visit of the champions next weekend has a less foreboding aura to it, after Chelsea were rolled over by Burnley on Saturday.
The power of three points and an opening day win, eh?
Transfer splurge
This goodwill, sadly, can only last so long. Most locals won’t be truly happy, until Spurs finally break the lock off their transfer war chest, which is presumably collecting dust in Daniel Levy’s office. Mauricio Pochettino himself, who earlier in the summer advocated the merits of continuity and frugal spending, has conceded that Tottenham must invest. There’s only so long you can toe the party line:
“For me, we need to sign some players before the end of the transfer window. It’s important to improve the squad, create competition between us.”
With 10% of the imminent Glyfi Sigurdsson’s deal set to roll into the Levy vault, around £4.5m, depending on Everton’s final outlay, now feels like the right time to land a fiscal punch.
Business Insider have generously suggested that Spurs are set to throw down nearly £100m in the next week or so, tying up the loose ends on at least three new signings. Among those names are Ajax defender Davinson Sánchez, PSG’s problematic fullback Serge Aurier and, of course, Ross Barkley. In a treatment room somewhere, Danny Rose is furiously Googling away.
As has become the norm, of those potential targets, two of them look to have hit troubled waters already. If rumours that Real Madrid and Chelsea are both now interested in the Colombian stopper Sánchez, then, well, we might as well call it a day. There is a chance, however, that the Dutch club are simply trying to drive his price up, by implying there’re other, considerably richer suitors elsewhere. Ross Barkley, meanwhile, has twanged his hamstring and could be out of action for six weeks.
Roll on September.
