Ruben Amorim must take crucial Man United delay - Old Trafford call is a no-brainer

Manchester United's decision to delay the sacking of Erik ten Hag makes little sense the longer time goes on.

After seemingly agreeing to stick with the manager, it took just a further week of domestic matches to decide that Ten Hag was no longer the right man for the job. Sacking the Dutchman in the October international break would have allowed Ineos to conduct the business of trying to recruit Ruben Amorim much easier without having to negotiate around the football schedule.

Instead, Amorim's start date remains up in the air, with little time being afforded to the Portuguese head coach no matter when he decides to join. As such, the 39-year-old should choose to delay his start date beyond this week if at all possible.

Obviously, Ruud van Nistelrooy will be in the hot seat tonight when Leicester City travel to Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup and he should remain there too for the visit of Chelsea. With such little time remaining before the clash with Enzo Maresca's side, there seems little point of rushing Amorim into this clash when he needs to observe his current squad and examine what he can bring to the table to turn things around.

One of the best ways to do that would be to enjoy a watching brief at Old Trafford this weekend in the director's box to observe the United players and how they perform against one of their rivals for a top four spot. This would allow his first match to be in the Europa League against PAOK, which, with all due respect, is an opposition a bit kinder for a first match.

Leicester City is to come in the Premier League before the international break. By then, Amorim should have been given a good amount of time to formulate a plan in the short-term to get the Reds back up the table.

The rush to get Amorim in the building is understandable but should not extend to putting him in the dugout. Taking their time on that should only benefit the Reds and Amorim as he embarks on his first job outside Portugal.
