Roy Hodgson appointed Crystal Palace manager

Crystal Palace have appointed former England manager Roy Hodgson as their manager.

Hodgson, 70, returns to the club where he began his playing career in 1965 to succeed Frank de Boer who was sacked by the Eagles on Monday after just four Premier League matches in charge.

Joining on a two-year deal, he told the club’s website: “This is very much the club of my boyhood and I remember in my youth watching the club from the terraces at the Holmesdale Road end which gave me such fond memories. In those days I had dreams of playing for the team, then as a coach you think about coaching the team and a lot has happened in between times.

“It is very rewarding to find myself here now, in different times, as the Palace manager at a club that I have always loved and admired with a huge potential. We are the club of south London, with an enormously large fan base. The ambitions here are realistic and there is an enormous potential for growth and I hope we can achieve our goals.

“I am very excited to be back in club football and it is a long while since I have enjoyed the day to day sessions of training.”

Palace lost all those matches without scoring a goal and are bottom of the table.

The south Londoners become the fifth Premier League team Hodgson has managed after spells at Blackburn (1997-98), Fulham (2007-10), Liverpool (2010-11) and West Brom (2011-12) after which he managed England until the Euro 2016 defeat to Iceland.

He led Fulham to the Europa League final in 2010 where they lost 2-1 to Atletico Madrid.

Hodgson has also managed the Finland, UEA and Switzerland national teams as well as spells in charge at Inter and Malmo.

He is Crystal Palace’s 10th manager since 2010.
